coin-ticker's Introduction

Coin Ticker

A Safari, Chrome & Firefox extension that puts a configurable cryptocurrency ticker right in your browser.

Installation

Safari

Download the latest coin_ticker.safariextz release and double-click it to install or install it via the Safari Extensions Gallery. If you've made it to this page, I would highly suggest installing the extension through Github as it is the latest version.

The version in the Safari Extensions Gallery is not currently up to date with the version here, on Github.

Developed for Safari 7+.

Chrome

Head over to the Chrome Extension Store and install the extension from there.

Developed for Chrome 55+.

Firefox Install on Firefox through the Firefox Add-on page.

Usage

Upon first launch of the extension, there will be a short list of default coins displayed the ticker. You can change the coins that will be displayed in the ticker by clicking the + icon in the top bar of the extension.

first launch

To make finding your coins easier, you can use the filter bar on the tracking page to sort through all the different coins available.

add coins

You can use the search flag :checked within the filter bar to only show the coins that are currently selected. This makes "de-selecting" coins much easier.

filter coins

By default the coins are ordered by their rank on CoinMarketCap at around the time of the last update. Ranks change often, so don't expect the ranks in this extension to be reflective of the current coin rank (but it should be close).

You can reorder the coins by dragging and dropping from their icons.

Currencies

Prices can be reflected in the following fiat currencies: "AUD", "BRL", "CAD", "CHF", "CLP", "CNY", "CZK", "DKK", "EUR", "GBP", "HKD", "HUF", "IDR", "ILS", "INR", "JPY", "KRW", "MXN", "MYR", "NOK", "NZD", "PHP", "PKR", "PLN", "RUB", "SEK", "SGD", "THB", "TRY", "TWD", "ZAR"

You can also choose to show prices in BTC.

You can change the currency settings on the settings page.

Notes

  • All data is from CoinMarketCap
  • Coin icons from a personal fork of cryptocoins
  • Extension logo inspired by Anton Kalik
  • Because of API limits, the price data updates every 60 seconds

coin-ticker's Issues

Auto refresh coin prices

Rather than forcing the user to refresh manually while ticker is open (right now just opening the extension refreshes prices), prices should automatically update when ticker is open.

Ordering is off

The elements are not ordering the way they appear in settings page. Will fix in a minor version release.

Reorder coins in ticker view

  • user should be able to reorder the coins in the ticker view
  • when a user reorders the coins, the extension should remember this order

v1.1.0+ Improvements

  • Change the way Last Updated: is displayed to user
    • Right now it prints a date (Mon Dec 04 2017 01:53:05)
    • It's probably to just say something like 2 minutes ago
      • this should auto update when user is looking at extension in increments
        • moments ago, 30 seconds ago, 1 minute ago, 2 minutes ago, etc...
  • Update the price change visual after updating (increase/decrease)
    • maybe something a bit slow with an arrow up/down
  • #12

Suggestions

  • drag handle have a bigger "hitbox"
  • click to show BTC prices
  • set popover height in settings (adaptive up to x px)

two base currency

USD and near EUR
Or better three USD, EUR, BTC
BTC 3800 : 3400 : 1
ETH 140 : 120 : 0.0012
Add BTS (Bitshares), please
And I can't see USDT from #22
Thank you!

Improve "Last Updated" text

  • Change the way Last Updated: is displayed to user
    • Right now it prints a date (Mon Dec 04 2017 01:53:05)
    • It's probably to just say something like 2 minutes ago
      • this should auto update when user is looking at extension in increments
        • moments ago, 30 seconds ago, 1 minute ago, 2 minutes ago, etc...

Tabbing out of settings screen can cause issues

Recreate issue:

  • Enter settings screen
  • Add/remove coins
  • tab out
  • extension loses focus, but stays showing
  • if the request is deferred, it is canceled because the extension doesn't have focused (probably not visible, which is incorrect in this case)
    • if the request is not deferred, no issues
