cargo_bike's Introduction

Introduction

The CAD file cargo_bike.fcstd contains a parametric design for a cargo bike utilizing any arbitrary pre-built traditional bicycle frame and fork. Surrounding files (such as shell scripts, python scripts, dockerfiles, makefiles, etc.) provide the building blocks for automation infrastructure.

Design Notes

See wiki: https://wiki.sankey.info/index.php?title=Cargo_bike

The design is currently a WORK IN PROGRESS.

For a preview of the design, see screenshot:

Software

All development and scripts require FreeCAD 0.17+ and OCCT 7.1.0+. Since these bleeding edge versions can be difficult to obtain, a Dockerfile is provided to run FreeCAD from the freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily PPA in an Ubuntu image.

Docker on Debian 8 (jessie)

  • Obtain the docker.io package from jessie-backports.
  • Add your user to the docker group: sudo addgroup ${USER} docker
  • Build the docker image: make build-image

questions

hi troy, just some questions.
I looked at your site cooperation wiki, would like to ask you a couple of question before embarking in enw software.
Me and a friend of mine are working on our own bicycle model, he made a prototype by hand, I would like to check a bit more about the engineering part, that is, if we had to reproduce a few more models, test for types of tubes, infrastructural loads, angles... I would like to make a (parametric?) model on the software.

Fact is, I'd be new to FreeCAD.

Does the model of freeCAD is useful to study infrastructural loads and, eventually, to create a CAD file that companies for bending tubes could operate with traditional machineries ?

I see in your wiki referenced to vr3.ca/documents/ - would like to ask you about comments or suggestions from your experience with the cargo bike.
How did it go?
Where you guys able to make your cooperative?
Which challenges you had with engineering the prototype?
Was learning FreeCAD or parametrising the model useful, or you just sticked at the end to the maker part in artisan style ?
Thank you for sharing your considerations.
