Hi @lstrz sorry for the late reply but I have been quite busy with various academic stuff.
The question is clearly related to the very simple nature of the HW MAC engine (HWME from now on).
In the HWME, the nb_iter parameter is hardwired to the register @ offset 0x50 (you find the related assign here

). It is passed to the hwpe_ctrl_ucode module via the ucode_i input.
In general, the idea is that the programmer mostly interacts via register file values.

The function hwme_nb_iter_set (defined here https://github.com/pulp-platform/hal/blob/da89e73aa53f58ba44d951352cadfff974118bb1/include/hal/hwme/hwme_v1.h#L106 ) is used to store the value 4 inside the register at offset 0x50.
