If collectd eventually supports a prometheus export, can it relay information from another (host) collectd?

If you require your prometheus exporter to run in docker, say behind a reverse proxy with other services, you'd still need a host collectd to export the network metrics, etc. to a collectd-exporter.
So I'm not sure it can really be obsoleted for all use case...
node-exporter can't read host network metrics from within docker either.

That said, collect seems to require to be started after the exporter for some reason. Being UDP, I can't figure out why, but I'm not getting any data in the exporter if I restart it after collectd is started on a host.
