osu-wiki's Issues

Extending and Improving History Of osu! Family of Articles

the HOO Article has been left untouched for a while. I think it's about time we extend it

TODO :

  • Check for citations and resources that points to the 2012-2016 changes. (2015-2016's trails are still evident)
  • Rewrite Article(s).

Anyone can take over this issue

Full S3 wiki dump

This is for getting the images that are used on the wiki so articles can use it once the migration completes.

The current wiki S3 integration complicates things a bit due to mediawiki slowdowns and related stuff.

Cleanup efforts

Articles have cruft from the pandoc convertion:

  • Stray html from mediawiki quirks
  • Malformed tables
  • Missing references
  • Etcetera

Cleaning them and making them presentable is a collaborative effort for everyone.

This issue will be used for discussion on the efforts, but joining the discord chat is a better option for a more timely answer.

[Draft] Game Modes structure

This is a draft for #143 .

If nobody comments by Wednesday, I might consider to deal with Game_Modes (main four only).

If I did not finish by the end of February unless stated otherwise, assume all my PRs went stale.

# {Game Mode title}
## Introduction
{Either take FAQ explanation or the game mode description, whichever made more sense and complete}

It should roughly answer: What is this?, quick history if available (the original if emulation like osu! or Taiko), when it was implemented

## Hitobjects
{Can probably just take FAQ wholesale. For osu!, make sure sliderbreak was mentioned.}

### Playfield
### {Hitcircles}
### {Sliders}
### {Spinners}
### {special gimmick, one gimmick one header}

## Control
{Can probably just take FAQ wholesale, except osu!mania; just need to clean up osu!mania table}

### Play style
(Probably can be removed because it is subjective?)

## Scoring and Grade
{Take from the Score page, and Grade requirement}

## Skin elements
(A link to its Skinning, only)

## Beatmapping
(?)

## Trivia
Dump whatever pointless stuffs that will not help much but cool nevertheless.

Flag reference links template

Update: I have created a GitHub page to do the parsing for you.

Put these references at the bottom of your article, and remove the ones you don't use. If a user's flag doesn't exist, follow these rules for replacing the flag based on their country code:

  • BV uses flag_NO
  • FX uses flag_FR
  • UM uses flag_US
  • everything else uses flag___

osu!wiki Contribution Guide

Current OWCG elaborately explains every aspect of GitHub. It makes it very long and cluttered with useless information. It doesn't engage new contributors, but scare them off.

OWCG should be:

  • simple
  • short
  • easy to understand
  • preferably in image form
  • contain extra resources for inquisitive contributors

ppy said:

well i mean
it should be something linke

  • login to github
  • click edit button
  • make changes
  • submit pull request
    all using the web interface

Game Modifier icons - Inconsistent sizes

chrome_2017-06-07_17-44-15
why?
If anything, use the low res icons since we probably won't go any larger than 65px.

Please create a pr that replaces all of the current game modifier icons using the low res images in the shared/ folder.

Redirects

I am fixing redirects. Please let me know of what redirects you would want to be added.

The mapping technique pages are currently missing their images and examples.
What do you guys think about how it should be formatted, how images should be taken, etc.?

formatted

By formatted, how should the images be arranged, where should the example beatmaps go? Should I only take screenshots of just a dummy beatmap (no background) with the technique or should I also include the beatmap examples?

/edit will recreate from dummy beatmap and screenshot from beatmap

how images should be taken

By that, should they be .gif per 1/4 beat (for all hit objects) or a static .jpg (may miss other hit objects)?

/edit will use jpg

Unify the style of the Tournaments articles

Tournaments

Every official osu! tournament organised by osu!team should be ported to GitHub or added.
The articles should live up to the ASG and be Markdown clear.

Style

Style of all Tournament articles should match with style of the newest ones.

If there are groups, add them between Participants and Mappool with header level 2

Article Style Guide link in CONTRIBUTING.md leads to a blank page

The link is supposed to take you to https://new.ppy.sh/wiki/Article_Style_Guide, but it redirects instead to the old https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/Article_Style_Guide, which has no text. In fact, any links to https://new.ppy.sh redirect to their old counterparts.
I'm pretty sure that the new website had the style guide somewhere, so if it's still accessible, then we can port it over to its redirect, or we could make it not redirect (though there's probably a reason I'm not aware of as to why it does), or we could re-create the style guide.

Direct links into files of a directory does not/may not work

Pages like:

  • Skinning/Tutorial

May throw an error upon attempting to download the skin template

Pages like:

  • Skinning/Interface
  • Skinning/osu!
  • Skinning/osu!taiko
  • Skinning/osu!catch
  • Skinning/osu!mania

Will fail to load the "full size" image in Chrome and Opera; however, FireFox doesn't show this behavior and actually does load them.

Creating directory for Beginners Taiko Tournament

For the ease of locating the Beginners Taiko Tournament on a separate page for the future, similar to the osu! Tag Team Tournament, I request making a directory for this tournament. Inside the directory at the moment will simply be the images needed for the tournament and the actual contents of the page itself through the Markdown file. For the future, I wish to document the future years of the Beginners Taiko Tournament, similar to how the world cup series is documented, but if this isn't ideal, I completely understand the possible reasons as to why.

Thank you,
FlamingRok

A checkbox not only means that the translation exists, but also that someone (me, for now) has actually proofread it and found acceptable, at least for now.

Wiki Standards

Since we don't depend on Mediawiki anymore, we can have more freedom when making articles. Therefore, a new standards for articles should be made to reflect that.

This issue will be used for discussion on the efforts, but joining the discord chat is a better option for a more timely answer.

Helpdesk article changes

The flag on my account profile is wrong!
A picture of any sufficient 100 points of ID (passport, driver's license) representing this alongside a slip of paper with your osu! username written on it is required for us to even consider your request.
This has been changed to a picture of the ID with the user's account logged in to the client in the background.

Can I change my account's username?
Add something about requesting reverts. It should read like this:
If you regret a change you've made, contact support to ask it reverted. We will only change your username back to **your direct previous name** (if you've made several changes, we only revert the latest one) and **we will only do so once per account**.

osu! freezes when I click a link or multiplayer map!
propreties -> properties (this typo appears twice)
Remove the entire first paragraph, as it's redundant and the other two are more detailed.

Folder status in wiki.

Close this issue when the wiki folder received another major restructuring.
This is roughly how the osu!wiki structured, now since #127 was merged.

[Accurate as of 14/2/2017, Valentine's Day]

Root folders must satisfy one or more of these conditions:-

  • It must be an introduction to the topic in detail (FAQ, Beatmapping, Modding, ...)
  • It is an index folder of a topic, separated by sections using subfolders due to distinctive difference and text length (List_of_Guides, Game_Modes, History_of_osu!, ...)
  • It does not fit in any of the folders/distinctive topic/important (BBCode, Do_you_really_want_to_ask_peppy, shared, ...).

Folders with known subfolders:-

  • Achievements (First version of Beatmap packs achievement)
  • Annoucement (Anything from the News, except Tournaments and Best_Of)
  • Beatmap_Editor (Anything that can be seen in the Beatmap Editor in Edit mode)
  • Best_Of (years by folders)
  • Difficulties (difficulty explanation for beatmapping/play by folder)
  • Game_Modes (osu! game modes and external ports)
    • External_Ports (External ports emulating any of osu! game mode or capable of reading osu!beatmap)
  • Game_Modifiers (Summary)
  • History_of_osu! (osu!wiki = osu!wiki history [was Current_Events]. 1 = 2007/2008, 2 = ...)
  • Legal (Copyright, TOC)
  • Mapping_Techniques (Specific section separation by folder)
  • osu!_File_Formats (file extension format, for developers)
  • osu!_Program_Files (files in osu! folder)
  • People (self-explanatory)
  • Ranking_Criteria (by game modes)
  • Reporting_Bad_Behaviour (Handling_Cheating guide is inside)
  • Rules (short rules)
  • Skinning (Skinning elements)
  • Storyboard_Scripting (Separated by sections)
  • Storyboards (Maps list)
  • Submission (Ranking Procedure)
  • Tournaments (separated by events, separated by year)

Guides:-

  • Beatmap_Editor_Guides (Forum-written guides regarding Beatmapping and offline development of beatmap)
  • List_of_Guides (Forum-written guides not related to development of beatmaps)
  • Modding_Guides (Forum-written guides regarding Modding and online development of beatmap)

Non-English articles review problem

As we know, new/edit articles here need review~~(except being permitted).~~
But there's a problem: non-English writer/editor sometimes don't have other writer/editor/reviewer to review their article(s).
How to deal with these articles(PR)?

A suggestion: add reviewer list to contribution. md

Localizations for the meta articles

this was on the TODO list on PR #16. This is actually required since the redirect needs to be in multiple languages.
(note: this would not be closed until all of the meta articles has been ported to Markdown and has been localized completely)

Known issues (in hindsight)

Current known issues (features not found/unsupported/not yet implemented):-

  1. No templates support.
    1.1. No directory bar/box
  2. GitHub's Markdown language for table does not support colspan/rowspan (?). [Minor issue, probably, just rewrite it to raw HTML's table].
  3. No public front page (yet).
  4. No TOC (Table of Contents).
  5. Keeping image history. Example: https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/File:Multi-play.png
    5.1. Keeping the page history.

Trivial question:-

  1. Why migrate to GitHub?

May take a while for me to get used to GitHub. Expect no progress for now in GitHub as I experiment (I have no clue what am I doing. Very likely I may do hybrid raw HTML and Markdown as see fit).

Standardize PR messages

Currently, everyone has their own format for PR messages.

I'm proposing a template similarly used by larger projects like eclipse/che

Let just say I have no idea why I am doing this and no idea whether to put on /wiki or le /wiki/Welcome.

Score deletion/Outdated replay???

I completed a map yesterday, and the score uploaded as usual. I saved the replay to my library. Shortly after, the map requested me to update it to the latest version of itself, and after I did so, my score disappeared, and when I tried to watch the replay, i would get a notification saying something along the lines of "You do not have the beatmap this replay was made for!". I don't know how to fix this, hoping to get some help with it qwq

[Request] Wanted wiki features

[Request] Wanted wiki features

Features wanted for wiki writing and screw up the design by inventing internal zany designs but vanilla GitHub Markdown does not support it.

Important priority

Redirect

Implemented by MegaApplePi with nanaya guidance.

To add a redirect, see: https://github.com/ppy/osu-wiki/blob/master/wiki/redirect.yaml

Image size enforcement

Might be awkward to do in Markdown.

MediaWiki has their own syntax which is .

Something like below (throwing idea here)?

Inline style:-
![alt-text](./img/banana.jpg @69x69 !right "A picture of banana")

Reference style:-
![alt-text][BANANA]
[BANANA]: ./img/banana.jpg @69x69 !right "A picture of banana"

Table

Enabling Markdown support inside GFM table.

A external Markdown parser within GFM table content.

@TPGPL :-

| header | header |
| ------- | ------- |
| [!CONTENT_NAME!] | text |

(...)

[!CONTENT_NAME!]:
{
<content>
}

Usage example:-

| Item | Description |
| ------- | ------- |
| osu!supporter | [!Supporter!] |

(...)

[!Supporter!]:
{
Many advantages like:
- ok
- rip money
- nice nickname colour
- some direct
- menu bg!!!
}

Table attribute support

Table attributes like rowspan, colspan, and width support please while at it.

Low priority

Page content callout display

MediaWiki: (see the colon at the start?)

When I do this, just blindly display the file content of the file I point to.

Probably pointless (eats up some seconds to process), uses more folders, and annoying to do using current osu-web wiki design (which is using locales unless letting us directly call the .md file when doing this).

Was thinking of this while writing Game_Modes, Accuracy, Play_Styles, and Score where some information are fixed (like ScoreV1/ScoreV2, Accuracy formula, and Play Styles).

Templates

Template support plox.

MediaWiki uses to callout whatever wiki magic you put inside that templatename file and the variable you give to.

Will definitely contribute to server load but ease the real pain in dealing with People section (have fun C&P to all the language files the table itself when there is a change)

Gallery

See History of osu!: https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/History_of_osu!.

Example of usage done in MediaWiki:-

<gallery caption="Game Modifiers." perrow="2" heights="69px" widths="65px">
File:No_Video.png  | No Video mod
File:Hidden_v1.png | Hidden mod
</gallery>

Specifically, the game modifier icons would be nice to be put in a line rather than chaining them like totem pole like what was done on Accuracy for the screenshots: https://new.ppy.sh/wiki/Accuracy.

Probably could use a GFM table and ignore @MegaApplePi and the ASG about no images in the table. The Achievements page on new.ppy.sh is doing that (granted, it was before ASG was formulated at all).

Establish the "Welcome" page as a "portal" to other articles on the wiki with a *brief* overview of what osu! is about

Put plainly, the Welcome page currently isn't cutting it.

It is currently far too verbose, spans across several topics which likely need their own dedicated pages and essentially deluges the user in a wealth of information that they're probably not really ready for.

A good Welcome page should do the following:

  • Provide a clear, concise summary (<250 chars) of what the game is, what is available in the game (gamemodes, etc) as a starting point
  • Branch into links to pages for common points of interest, such as individual gamemodes and "Getting Started" style pages for each one
  • A section dedicated to the beatmapping/modding process, with links to pages describing the major details of the system and how people can get involved
  • A section dedicated to "Current Events", from running official tournaments to major events
  • A contributor section dedicated to linking to this repository and introducing users to how they might contribute (it is a wiki, after all)
  • It also needs to not look shit.

Clear, concise and relatively neutral English is important here. I'll make a few passes of this myself to provide an example as a working base.

We should start here and work outwards. The Welcome page is the first point of entry for people looking to find information, so we need to make it as easy as possible for them to find that information.
