queersintech's Introduction

Queers in Tech - An inclusive community of queers and allies in technology ๐ŸŒˆ

Queers in Tech is a community based project created by Patrick Porche and Spencer Dezart-Smith. The purpose is to bring together queers and allies around the world who are currently involved in the tech industry.

  • Queers in Tech Meetup ๐Ÿฅ‚
  • Queers in Tech Medium ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ป

We believe that queers are extrordinary human beings! We contribute a diversity of experiences, identities, backgrounds and contribute a unique perspective to the tech industry. We are engineers, diversity managers, CEO's, customer service representatives, founders, students and visionaries. Our goal is to bring together this community to share experiences, ideas and potentially collaborate together to make tech industury more inclusive and a better partner to the commmunities in exists within.

queersintech's Issues

Research Devpost

devpost.com/hackathons has a platform to post hackathons.

What features do we get to market? How would we integrate with the existing app/website? Are there integration options for events platforms such as eventbrite/meetup/universe?

Lyft api integration

We tried integrating the Lyft api into the application, and our first call to their endpoints was successful, but subsequent attempts all reached the same error. Lyft's servers were responding with a 404 status code, and I could not find anything in their documentation talking about a 404 status code. As of yet, the issue is still unsolved.

Research image optimazation

We need the images on the site to render faster. Look into finding smaller images to serve.

Would it be faster and more performant if we stored all assets in a database or hosted them online?

Events page

Build events page mockup. For now... this is a landing page that shows all events. This can be dummy data for now. This ticket also has some research responsibility.

Between options like EventBrite, Universe, Meetup etc.

eventbrite.com
meetup.com
universe.com

What platforms offer seamless integration?

Can we embed content into a local page? Or should we link out to an individual events page on their platform?

Implement a Forum

We are planning on having a forum that exists on a subdomain of queersintech.

Ideally, the app would live at forums.queersintech.com... Bonus points if you could get this up and running.

There is a service called discourse that will handle all of this through a CMS that would live on the subdomain. This is part research (are there better forum platforms?) and implementation.

Design Medium Publication Landing Page

Medium Publication Landing Page

Queers in tech has a publication on Medium. This allows multiple technical bloggers/writers to contribute on the platform.

Here is an example of the publication for Free Code Camp: Free Code Camp Example.

Specifications

Please open up a pull request and copy the information above into the raw text. Once all boxes are complete include a link to the publication landing page.

Contributors Sections

Write the code to have all technical writers and all open source contributors through the github and medium API.

We need Name, Picture, and Profile Link.

Github info will be based off collaborators to the queersintech repository.

Medium info will be based of technical writers on the queersintech publication.

Turn Website into React App

Queers in Tech React App

Specifications

This a pretty open project. You have the freedom to restructure the site anyway that makes since for the project to be scalable.

Please open up a pull request and copy the information above into the raw text. Commit at regular intervals and submit links in slack for review.

Implement Continuous Integration

Continuous Integration

Specifications

This is completely open to your research and previous knowledge. Please communicate your thought process, and the pros and cons of using different packages/resources.

Open a pull request and copy the above text. Commit frequently and post review links in slack.

Deploy App to AWS

Deploy the app on an instance of AWS using some sort of continuous integration model.

  • Research a pipeline.

Write CONTRIBUTING.md

  • Write CONTRIBUTING.md per template
  • All tests must be ran and passing before submitting a pull request
  • When adding a new feature/page/component and/or modifying an existing feature/page/component, write new unit tests or modify the existing test to coincide with the changes.

Make media page

We talked a bit about creating a page with content. I think the MVP of this particular ticket would be to embed the medium posts (from queers in tech) into the page.

We want to integrate Twitter, Medium, and YouTube videos, either through APIs, already curated content, or scraping.

The biggest gotcha is we don't want to arbitrarily search the web for random content we won't have control over.

Build Resources Page

Queers in Tech seeks to ally with other organizations that share a similar mission and values. We want to make sure that we are constantly acknowloging queer organizations that align with our vision and want to be a resource for individuals to find exactly what they are looking for.

As a community mission-driven organization, we want to create direct relationships whenever we can.

The resources page will be a place to find links and information about other great queer companies doing wonderful things around the world.

Data visualization feature

This is an open ended ticket. Please be as creative as you can! We're looking for some sort of interactive (dashboard, map, ?) data visualization project that speaks to unique data for the queer community.

Think employment numbers, population density (particularly in metropolitan cities), financials, etc. More specifically things people may be looking for when researching a job.

Again this is flexible, if the specs lead towards this feature shifting into something else we're fine with that!
