Kernel-cache issue for iPhone2G with 2.2 (can you help ?)

     Hi,

Two days ago I've 'accidentally' deleted the file
from /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/kernelcache.s5l8900x
(note the additional 'x' as compared to the path from iBootCommands.wiki)
and ended up with a 'iBrick' always booting in recovery mode. As I really
did not want to loose all my data and customizations via an iTunes
restore, I started (for a few good long hours) poking around with custom
IPSWs with no main ramdisk (no result), iBooter (found in the end not to
work for 2.x) and iPhUC (this was the most used for 'poking' around,
including some failed restore command, some setenvs, reboots etc.).

At some point I found out about iRecovery and compiled it on a MAC.
You can imagine my joy when, after some more poking around, i did an "-f
kernelcache.s5l8900x" (and yes, this is the kernel cache from the custom
IPSW that was used in the first place to unlock / jailbreak the 2.2 FW on
the same phone) and an "-s" with an "bootx" :)

But ... altough I'm really gratefull for the current state of facts
(as I have everything back), I am still left with an annoying issue: even
tough I've SCPed the file back into its location, every poweroff / reboot
would get me back into recovery mode. Oh, and I must mention that I also
tried (for the fun of it, silly me) the "mw 0x2201c5e0 0xffffffff" stuff,
which only worked once, and then I got "Permission Denied" (even when I
tried to set it back to 0x2C0000). I also poked around printenv / setenv /
saveenv, but everything 'seems' normal. My (un-educated) guess is that
fsboot will give a "Permission Denied" at every boot (and I base this on
the fact that it also gives me one when I try it and based on
a "Permission Denied" output from iRecovery startup, just
after "HFSInitPartition: 0x18035650").

So, can you help me here ?

Some more (little hints) (maybe not related):
        - for me it seems that the ENV variable '?' may have something to
do with the permissions / boot flags, but it seems also 'dynamic'
(changing value during a session)
        - BootNeuter 2.1 freezes after detecting current config (BL 4.6,
neuter ON, fake blank OFF, unlock ON), but I can not say for sure that it
did not freeze before my 'quest' also ...

Safari Hacks

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.http://z.haus.dj/boom.mov
2. http://milw0rm.com/exploit.php?id=7673
3. i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html - used to work now they (the site) fixed it.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
1. Crashes and restarts.
2. Hangs requires a force restart (lock and home)
3. Doesn't work now
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Ipod touch 2g 2.1

Please provide any additional information below.
People say you can't hack apps but i think safari is a native apple app
which has less limitations and is more intergrated (allows web clips and
such) and could be used for an exploit (such as appsnap). Please correct me
if i'm wrong. thx

Finding an exploit.

ChronicDev Team,

I have been thinking of any way that would allow you to get inside the ipod
on a windows or mac computer. I am using windows so here is my idea:
If you could find a way to open the ipod in windows explorer through my
computer. There may be some files that could help you. The ipod already
allows you to view a downloaded pictures folder through my computer but the
rest of the ipod is invisible. I accidentally achieved this when i was
browsing through a friends ipod and had no experience with them. I did not
install itunes but i installed the ipod and i saw all of the ipods system
files through my computer.

My other thought was if there was any way of modifying the backed up data
in c:\Documents and settings\USERNAME\application data. (that is on a
windows PC obviously). Would it be possile to add some extra files in to
the backed up data then restore the ipod with a modified backup.

I am not a very experienced hacker so please dont just laugh in my face.
Your team are working towards a jailbreak in the Ipod Touch 2g and i just
hope i can help.

Thanks for your time,

Alex

i may have found something

when you connect an ipod touch 2g to windows xp, and open the device manager
1.control panel
2.system
3.hardware
4.device manager
5.serial bus controller (USB)
6.apple mobile device USB driver
i was looking and you can go to the driver section and update, and it will
do somehting to the ipod, so i was thinking somehow make the jailbreak be
the update, or you may be able to get more inside than i could and find the
exploit, now i dont know if thats completely stupid but you never know but
go team go! im dying waiting over here

Success in cracking the ipod *new* (system folder(s))

Yesterday, i downloaded the new "windows 7/ 7000 build beta" from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx. When i have not
downloaded iTunes yet, but i plugged in my iPod. When i did that i got a
pop up of the new Microsoft device management center, in this i opened up
my ipod's folder. I found out more iPod system files in there, and not in
my old xp OS. Within that i could access my iPods music, videos, and most
importan apps and the IPSW file(s). Apple does not know about the new
Windows 7 beta, so they have not updated the "iPod to computer link".

People Not Getting The Message

People keep asking the same questions that have been answered 70000000 times.

Q: When is the exploit coming?
A: That's like predicting when we'll cure cancer!

Q: I pluged it into my computer and a window popped up, did I just jailbreak it?
A: If it was that easy we wouldn't be putting so much time into this!

Q: I ran pwnage and I think it worked on my 2g!
A: No, that's impossible!

Q: This site says they have an exploit, is it true?!
A: If a REAL exploit is found you will be sure to hear about it from chronic.

Their's soooo many of these questions, I've subscribed to this wiki feed and I
keep getting
notifications about people asking questions that have been answered and
covered. Be patient, go
get some.

Don't comment on this. For every comment you post on this a puppy dies.... I
will make sure of
that!
