Now it's checking master.

Try adding to pythonpath (after virtualenv) path to system site-packages. This could solve problem with installing globally python dependencies.

If repo on list does not exist - handle better that info.

Maybe indicate somehow in tray menu that repository has not staged changes in the working tree.

It should only work if branch is fast-forwardable.

Now there is only checking if directory exists. If yes, fetch is done.
It should be checked if it is git repository and next - if specified branch exists. If not, report it.
Possibly best solution is using gitpython package. It gives all needed git API.

Now it is only checked if HEAD hash of local branch is the same as on remote.
Local changes newer than on remote should not indicate that local branch is not up to date.
Try with git merge-base --is-ancestor <commit> <commit>
