When running this, I can see that the listen threads get created, but the program never progresses beyond the call to input()

This can be demonstrated by changing the process_command(input()) line to:

print('process_command')
i = input('> ')
print(f'input = {i}')
process_command(i)

process_command is printed, but no matter what is pressed, input = ... is never printed.
