Saving window maximize state (RM #334)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/334
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-18 21:21:39 UTC.

Almost all Windows applications remember the maximize state of their windows the next time they start up. I've noticed that this is not true for pgAdmin; by default it always starts up non-maximized. Changing the shortcut's properties to force maximization works for the main window, but new query windows are still non-maximized.

This is a minor issue, but saving the maximize state is a very widely-accepted convention. Windows users are accustomed to closing a maximized window by moving the mouse to the upper-right corner of the screen. A window, i.e. a new query window, that always starts up non-maximized can be irritating, because the usual gesture to close it ends up closing the application behind it instead.

Bug in Query Tool pgAdmin III 1.10.0 - Query Menu (RM #307)

Just a little bug.

In the query tool screen, each time we switch from "Graphical Query
Builder" pane to "SQL Editor" pane a new item is added
to Menu Query : "Generate SQL from Graphical query builder model".
If we switch 10 times then 10 entries is added to menu.

pgScript engine is not threadsafe (RM #301)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/301
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-06-26 08:13:33 UTC.

We are users of your great tool pgAdmin since we started migrating
projects to [[PostgreSQl]]. But just two days ago we noticed a very nasty
bug in the otherwise very great little tool pgScript.

One of our developers needed to fire a lot of updates for a specific
range of values, so he wrote a neat little pgScript code to do it.
Essentially only a loop with some variables which are incremented and
passed to an UPDATE statement. But some days ago he also noticed a very
nasty behavior while running two pgScript in two different query windows
at the same time (he needed to run it against many diferent DBs). As he
had some PRINT outputs to monitor the advance of his script he noticed,
that one script got some absolutely wrong values for one of his
variables.

The I wrote a simplified version of the loop - even left out the SQL
code (!) - to look what happens. And as soon as I run them it TWO query
windows (but started from the same pgAdmin process!) I could notice the
weirdest behaviors one could expect. The most usual was early
termination of the loop - without error messages - but there were also
loops which then run much longer as their target value would have
suggested. In one case, we even got an "unhandled exception" which
completely nuked pgAdmin.

As soon as we did not run in TWO threads in ONE process, but instead run
the Query in two different processes (started pgAdmin twice and opened
one Query window in each), everything was fine. We could run the script
as often as we wanted (and the same time as the other was running) and
nothing went wrong. The script went just trough deterministically.

So, from this observations I would dare to say, that this looks like
some very basic "thread safety" precautions were omitted in the pgScript
code.

I would also say, that this is a dangerous BUG! Think about a similar
script like ours, which has to delete data from a specific range. Now,
what if it deletes more, because the LOOP runs longer?@

And you might also ask, why the hell we would run more than one similar
scripts at the same time? Well, if you need to do a maintenance task
(the same task) for many DBs or Servers, you might easily come up with
the idea to do it from many query windows.

Finally, I would - of course - share the simple script, which helps to
reproduce the odd behavior. With it, I hope, you can quickly pinpoint
the issue and fix it. Before that I would recommend to issue a warning
to users, to never run more then one pgScript rom the same process.

Here is the Script, start it from two query windows (from one process)
at the same time, and you should easily see what I mean:

DECLARE @v_package;
DECLARE @v_purchaseidmin;
DECLARE @v_purchaseidmax;

DECLARE @v_to;
DECLARE @v_from;
DECLARE @v_i;

SET @v_package = 10;
SET @v_purchaseidmin = 0;
SET @v_purchaseidmax = 120000000;

SET @v_from = @v_purchaseidmin;
SET @v_to = (@v_purchaseidmin + @v_package);
SET @v_i = 1;

WHILE ( @v_from <= @v_purchaseidmax ) BEGIN

   PRINT  'from: ' + CAST(@v_from AS STRING);
   PRINT 'to: ' + CAST(@v_to AS STRING);
   PRINT 'i: ' + CAST(@v_i AS STRING);

   -- some SQL code could be executed here

   SET @v_from = (@v_from + @v_package);
   SET @v_to = (@v_to + @v_package);
   SET @v_i = @v_i+1;

Centralize connection parameter parsing/generation (RM #2)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/2
Originally created by Magnus Hagander at 2009-04-24 13:34:55 UTC.

The code for parsing and generating connection parameters is duplicated in several places (both in "just pgadmin" and between pgadmin and the debugger).

I noticed this in the number of places I had to touch to do the sslverify/sslmode work.

This seems like a good candidate for refactoring to avoid making such mistakes again :-)

Savepoints in PgAdmin (RM #336)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/336
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-21 07:49:55 UTC.

I am using [[PgAdmin]] 1.10.0 with Postgresql 8.3.7 on Windows XP Pro (SP3).

The problem I am facing deals with savepoint and rollback management in [[PgAdmin]]. I initiate a transaction, then I run different queries, create a savepoint :

BEGIN;
CREATE temp TABLE toto (id int);
INSERT INTO toto VALUES (1);
SAVEPOINT my_save;

Then, I execute a wrong query :

SELECT * FROM tot;

I get an error message :

ERROR: relation "toto" does not exist
********** Erreur **********
ERROR: relation "toto" does not exist
État SQL :42P01

But I can't rollback to my savepoint, because a complete rollback has already been executed by [[PgAdmin]] :

ROLLBACK TO my_save;

ERROR: ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT can only be used in transaction blocks
********** Erreur **********
ERROR: ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT can only be used in transaction blocks
État SQL :25P01

This problem seems to come from the fact that [[PgAdmin]] executes code in a single transaction statement... How is it possible to create different transaction statements within [[PgAdmin]], in order to use savepoints ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Crash when configuring an pgAgent job (RM #305)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/305
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-06 10:19:41 UTC.

Hello,

Here is my setup:

  • [[WinXPSP]]3
  • [[PostgreSQL]] 8.4.0: postgresql-8.4.0-1-windows.exe
  • pgAgent: pgAgent-3.0.0-win32.zip
    I have copied the exe and dll to the pg8.4 binary directory.
  • pgAgent.sql was executed in database postgres
  • pgAgent service is installed

Steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. Select "New job" from the "Jobs" tree element context menu.
    (NOTE: The elipses are missing in the command text)
  2. Enter a name for the job and close the dialog with OK.
  3. Select command "Properties" from the context menu of the newly
    created job.
  4. Activate the schedules tab and press "Add".
  5. Close the schedule dialog using "Cancel".
  6. BOOOOOMMMM r1

Note: The same happens if I try to add a step and the "Step
Definition" dialog is closed.

PgAdmin shouldn't need constant connection to db server (RM #330)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/330
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-07 15:42:07 UTC.

I usually use hibernation instead of shut down - to carry on with work in the morning. The problem is that I can't carry on with work using pgAdmin - it says that connection is lost to server few times and goes to disconnected from server state. Then I have to connect again. All query windows loses connections as well. I have to connect them also.
My question is - do we really need to be connected to server all the time? Why not "connect when needed" strategy? Maybe theres an setting I don't know about? Is there a workaround?

Statistics for databases, indexes and functions (RM #320)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/320
Originally created by Guillaume Lelarge at 2009-08-06 11:07:46 UTC.

Here are three patches for statistics on various objects:

  • database: we had statistics on the Databases node but we didn't have them on each individual database node.
  • indexes: we had statistics on each individual index node but we didn't have them on the Indexes node of each table.
  • functions: we didn't have them at all, but it is now needed on 8.4.

I did a patch for each one because I'm not sure they will all be accepted right away. For the database one, I'm not sure that copying the [DisplayStatistics] function code is the better way to make it work. On the index one, should I also display statistics for primary key and unique constraints? it seems it would be a good idea. But it would meant that only these constraints would be displayed. CHECK constraints, for example, would be invisible. Comments?

Cannot open files without dot in names for backup-restore (RM #325)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/325
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-06 11:29:09 UTC.

When you try to restore some database from backup file pgadmin3 pops up [[FileSelection]] dialog from gtk. I can choose here between showing ".backup" or ".*" files.

The second filter howerver doesn't show all files. To show all files in this dialog there muste be "*" filter.

Right now you cannot open files named: "my-cool-backup", "something" "coolDatabase"... etc..

lost connection, pgadmin crashes (RM #331)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/331
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-10 20:44:46 UTC.

Is there any hope of fixing the problems that [[PgAdmin]] has when it loses a connection? In an SQL window, if the connection is lost, and I ask to rerun the query (more than once), [[PgAdmin]] crashes. In the main, it will close the browser.

Is there any way for it to try to reconnect before it reports problems. Often, it may be the fact that the server drops the connection (or a network issue) if there is no activity for a period of time, and a reconnect behind the scenes would be really helpful.

i18n enhancements (RM #293)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/293
Originally created by Guillaume Lelarge at 2009-05-04 19:47:43 UTC.

From Heikki:

There's still a lot of troublesome constructs like “Cannot drop system %s”, where %s is replaced with “View”, “Sequence” etc. That doesn't work for many languages, including Finnish, where the following word needs to be inflected differently depending on the context.

and:

For messages like ”%d seconds”, ”%d rows”, the plural forms of the formatting functions/macros should be used, see http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/gettext.html#Plural-forms. Google suggests that wxWidgets has a wxPLURAL macro for plural forms, that works like the _() macro that's used for normal strings.

pgadmin3 won't use IPv6 (RM #326)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/326
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-06 13:42:16 UTC.

When adding a new server in pgadmin3 that has no IPv4 address, I get the error:

An error has occurred:

Could not resolve hostname db.deor

It also doesn't accept the literal IPv6 address, complaining it can't resolve it.

I guess it just needs some IPv6 resolver/socket code, as the [[PostgreSQL]] client/server stuff is all perfectly v6-aware.

This is version 1.8.4-3, from Jaunty.

Grouping servers (RM #292)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/292
Originally created by Guillaume Lelarge at 2009-05-04 19:44:52 UTC.

Use case:
Having to administrate around 150 [[PostgreSQL]] servers. 150 registered servers will probably be a mess in the treeview. We don't have grouping functionality, folder-like to group servers by
<insert here everyone's idea> (geographical for example: one group for all Paris servers, another one for all servers in Marseilles, etc.).

Even better if it can dynamically create the node when needed, so that you can register servers directly under the "root" node. Then there won't be "an extra click" for those who just have 5-10 servers and don't need the grouping.

Refresh tree following script (RM #332)

Issue migrated from Redmine: https://redmine.postgresql.org/issues/332
Originally created by Anonymous at 2009-08-17 10:18:58 UTC.

When running a script option from a treeview node, we should refresh the node whenever the script is executed to try to keep the tree in sync. This will probably involve passing a pointer to the treeview node to frmQuery, and refreshing it when the query returns.
