copperpdf's Introduction

Warning: I am not actively maintaining this app anymore. Feel free to fork this repository keeping the app name and to hijack the F-Droid app. Should you do so please drop me a note, so I'll be able to update this notice and point to your repository.

CuprumPDF

Description

CuprumPDF is a PDF viewer based on pdf.js, which is currently the only PDF renderer written in a memory-safe language. It doesn't require any permission: the PDF to be visualized is passed to the app using Content Providers.

This is a fork of PDF Viewer, an app written by Daniel Micay and distributed with CopperheadOS. The fork was made before the license was changed from Apache 2.0 to Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, which is not a Free/Libre Software license due to the NonCommercial clause. The credit for the idea goes to Daniel Micay, who is also the sole copyright owner up to 93970ac.

Contributions

Pull requests are welcome. Please don't submit feature requests if you're not willing to contribute with code; I'm not an Android developer, so I won't implement them. Do not rip off non-free code from Copperhead's repository. The licenses are not compatible, so new features have to be written from scratch.

copperpdf's Issues

CopperheadOS documentation cannot be copied

The documentation has never been available under a free software license and doesn't offer the right to make derivatives of it. Documentation is copyrighted just like code. Linking to the CopperheadOS technical overview is also misleading now that it offers more features and improved sandboxing compared to what it did before it was relicensed.

F-Droid apk issues

Very excited to see a FOSS pdf-viewer app finally it F-Droid, so thank you! However when trying to install from the F-Droid app is impossible, as there is no download link and the app itself is greyed out in the apk list.

Manually downloading the apk from https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.ninthfloor.copperpdf wasn't helpful either, as when trying to install and error with message "There was a problem parsing this package" gets thrown:

Slow open/render pdf files.

I am using am SM-N910H smartphone. It is rather fast system to operate with even large books in pdf format. But this app opened and rendering every new page really slow.

Incompatible with popular Android devices

The app supports min SDK 23, which is incompatible with some of the popular Android devices currently in use such as Galaxy J2, J1 Ace, Grand Prime, and Oppo A37f. These Android devices support min SDK 22.
