The REMOTE files are scheduled for removal. Because of this, netinterfaces needs to be modified to perform pure network configuration without relying on the REMOTE file functionality. The implementation of REMOTE file mechanism can be found here.

The gist of it is that the appropriate profile from /etc/network/profiles.d/ should be symlinked from /etc/network/interfaces.d/wlan0, and the /etc/wpa-supplicant.conf or /etc/hostapd.conf generated/modified.

In theory, it should be possible to perform this operation without a reboot. Rebooting is acceptable if it reduces complexity, though. Configuration should not be considered successful until association with the specified AP is confirmed. In case of unsuccessful configuration, settings should be reverted to AP mode.

Suggestion for testing the success condition is to check that the interface has an IP address.

Another requirement is that the IP check should be done on boot and configuration reverted to AP mode if IP is lost.

Note that STA mode association may take a few minutes in worst case.

File requests/PR for OS-level support for this feature in rxOS repo as needed.

The 'Remote Key' field should be removed.
