I really believe that we should consider https://hackweek.opensuse.org/22/projects/opensuse-12-dot-1-dvd-art for being the ultimate wallpaper. It has a great idea and spirit. It could be perhaps also digitalized.

I think this is a good colour for the light theme variant, I will experiment more with darker purples with the dark mode version most likely

I am assuming SUSE team that's working on that knows how to communicate with us, would be nice to see communication besides just co-coordination :P

Well, you can obviously fade things away to make images unobtrusive like the guidelines say, I'm just not sure that's the right approach for this particular piece...

We do offer additional set of wallpapers for that purpose, however that's not what this is about. This is about the default wallpaper, which is meant to be low contrast. That doesn't mean that the wallpaper can't be humorous, the current Tumbleweed and Leap wallpapers cause a lot of people smile when they see the toilets on there.

Definately more in the right direction IMHO...and with this lower contrast I can actually imagine the purple one being darker purple, as long as the contrast doesn't increase :)

@hellcp I did a small proposal of co-ordination of efforts in between us and SUSE's branding team. It would be perfect if the first ALP desktop prototype from SUSE would be based already on this new set. I'm not sure when to expect it though.

It would be against our wallpaper guidelines

Thanks @lkocman, I'd be delighted if there's some way my geeko art could be used, although I'm not sure how to make it meet the guidelines @hellcp mentioned.

That seems even worse, the point of those guidelines is not to have objects on the desktop that draw unnecessary attention, so having a wallpaper that's just geeko or just a lightbulb or any other single object is not going to be acceptable. We do have secondary wallpapers that never landed in the distro though, so if you want to revive that project, go ahead and work out packaging and distribution of the openSUSE/wallpapers repo

Right, makes sense.

OK, I did not know about that project, thanks for the pointer.

JFTR in the meantime I've put my original photos plus a couple of wallpaper JPGs in https://github.com/tserong/hackweek22

I ran it through Cupscale and used The GIMP to change the dimensions to 5120x3840. Now you have it big. Enjoy.

After I read about the openSUSE default wallpaper as "inanimate" in a forum, and kind of feeling what the person meant by that statement, I decided to ask DALL-E for help by providing it with some instructions and got a result that might be more satisfying. I think changing the wallpaper is an easy thing and if it makes users more motivated to work with openSUSE, why not?

Unfortunately DALL-E does not provide a high resolution result. Here is a modified, post processed version of it that should look OK on up to 4K screens:

I noticed that apparently we only use scalable vector graphics here - if that is the case such wallpapers as above are not possible unfortunately.

That also doesn't follow the wallpaper guidelines linked before

Thanks for your reply. You are right, and thanks for pointing it out. And I do get the point of having these guidelines. However, it looks to me like the expectation of some people would be more toward having something entertaining or interesting on their desktop which is clearly visible.
Given that users can change the background, personally I would even say, as long as they like it in the first seven days after the installation I would be fine with it.

From a gut feeling, I would pretty much try to balance low contrast areas and content on a wallpaper. So if it was up to me, I would not make the guidelines that strict. Just to leave the opinion here.

Hello team,

I started a discussion with SUSE Branding team, regarding Leap 16 wallpaper collection

I'll keep you posted as soon as I have some new information.
The idea is to have 5 wallpapers, and at least three of them could be shared with other openSUSE distributions (photos + openSUSE project abstract wallpaper)
