Maybe I'm confused, but I thought the VIAF IDs referred to works, not editions. For example:
https://viaf.org/viaf/181860567/
That is Dante's Commedia, not any particular edition. Or am I wrong?

And if there are many numbers for one person, that is an error (duplicate), not a feature of the VIAF model.

However, I am open to using other IDs if you think they might be more exhaustive or accurate. We can change persons to ISNI, if you think that is better.

Hello:

  • Nope, duplicates are the purpose of VIAF. Libraries confront different numbers, and there is a slow process of selection. VIAF does not provide stable and unique IDs
  • Exemple pour histoire de Saint Louis : 306092264 ou 14159474324027662769 ou 3113154015350509310007 catalogued as different works.

Ok, what could we use instead of VIAF for works?

Absolutely no idea… I suggest sticking to VIAF despite problems, and taking the one with the most libraries. for people ISNI is safer, but it would imply correcting all stemmata previsouly encoded.

Closing, as we have settled this in favour of VIAF.
