We can recommand some loose Guidelines, perhaps ? But I don't see us normalizing places for all Medieval and Ancient Europe (and possibly more)… Or point to some authority list, like @GusRiva suggested for works and authors ?

An authority list would be great, but it is a lot of work… I was thinking about more simple things like adding the region/province if there is a town for instance. Beauvais (Picardie, France). It does not have to be strict, but it would help users, and possible queries in the future. If we end up with things from portuguese monasteries or swedish castles, we are going to lose track of things because no one knows where they are on the map…

- modern reference (as generally recommended), for instance: Thionville (Moselle, France); Thillot (canton d'Étain, Meuse, France).
- old style (Thionville, county of Luxemburg, etc.).
