BlockTheSpot-Mac

A multi-purpose adblocker and skip-bypass for the Spotify for MacOS

Please support Spotify by purchasing premium
For Windows, use BlockTheSpot

Last updated: 06 July 2024
Last tested version: 1.2.32.985

We need collaborators.

  • We are running short of people who can collaborate and maintain this project. If you are good with bash scripting, please create an issue here or contact red.dev in discord.

Features:

  • Blocks all banner/video/audio ads within the app
  • Blocks logging (Sentry, etc)
  • Unlocks the skip function for any track
  • Blocks Spotify automatic updates (optional)
  • Hides podcasts, episodes and audiobooks on Home Screen (optional)
  • Enable Developer Mode (optional)

Installation/Update:

  • Close Spotify completely.
  • Run The following command in Terminal:
bash <(curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nuzair46/BlockTheSpot-Mac/main/install.sh)

Note:

  • BlockTheSpot-Mac now requires codesign to sign the binaries after patching.
  • For this, you will need to have Xcode installed on your mac.
  • To install xcode, use the following command in terminal:
xcode-select --install
  • If you have already installed xcode, you can skip this step.
  • If you have Intel mac, you can try skipping codesign by using the -S flag.

Optional Install Arguments:

-f Force patch -- forces re-patching if backup detected
-h Hide podcasts, episodes and audiobooks on home screen
-P Path to Spotify.app -- set custom Spotify app path
-u Block updated -- blocks automatic updates
-d Enable Developer Mode
-S Skip Codesign -- only to be used if you have intel mac
-U Uninstall BlockTheSpot-Mac and restore original.

Use any combination of flags.
The following example clears app cache, adds experimental features, leaves new UI enabled and blocks updates:

bash <(curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nuzair46/BlockTheSpot-Mac/main/install.sh) -hu

Uninstall:

  • Close Spotify completely.
  • Run The following command in Terminal:
bash <(curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nuzair46/BlockTheSpot-Mac/main/install.sh) -U

or

  • Reinstall Spotify

Notes:

  • Audio/video ads during Podcast playback are currently NOT blocked with BlockTheSpot.
  • Spicetify users: When using BlockTheSpot-Mac + Spicetify, the current script requires running BlockTheSpot first.

DISCLAIMER

  • Ad blocking is the main concern of this repo. Any other feature provided by BlockTheSpot-Mac or consequence of using those features will be the sole responsibility of the user, not BlockTheSpot/BlockTheSpot-Mac.
  • All future forks/clients using this of this repo should be licensed under AGPL-3.0 License.

blockthespot-mac's Issues

Handling script arguments when running directly from curl...

With the introduction of script arguments, we now need a way to pass the arguments when running the script directly from curl.

Currently "-c" is the only flag/argument supported.. so 2 methods to call this would be:
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SpotX-CLI/SpotX-Mac/main/install.sh | bash -s -- -c
and
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SpotX-CLI/SpotX-Mac/main/install.sh | bash -s /dev/stdin -c

Is -s -- or -s /dev/stdin preferred? Or does someone have a suggestion which is not listed above?

📝 Description

I updated my laptop to the latest version of macOS. After this whenever I go on Spotify (with BlocktheSpot installed) I get ads every 20 to 25 minutes. I have tried to fix this problem by uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify but that hasn't helped and I have also tried to reinstall BlocktheSpot but this didn't help either.

Latest Spotify version shows older UI after patching with SpotX, even without the -o flag
To reproduce:

  1. Install latest spotify, open to see new UI
  2. Patch with spotX, without the -o flag, clear cache for good measure
  3. Reopen spotify, see older UI.
The same behavior happens if patched WITH the -o flag as well (ran uninstall script between attempts obviously)

Search/home missing

I installed SpotX but while the ads are gone, I cannot find the search or home buttons. When I use the search keyboard shortcut (Cmd+L), it doesn't show me the search bar (although search does work when I type).

Is it possible to add the missing search/home features back in?

Thank you so much for your amazing project! :)

Feature rq: remove recommended songs from playlists

Can you add an option to remove this section below playlists?

I disagree with using the internet to find new songs. Its all distraction and no heart. Ive found all my years of music that I love from record stores and friends. Literally nothing from this emotionless list.
Please let me do away with it

Does it modify the original Spotify app? Also, wondering if I install using the -u flag, will it stop the update for both SpotX-Mac and the Spotify app itself?

📝 Description

  1. Run the SpotX script to install SpotX (bash <(curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SpotX-CLI/SpotX-Mac/main/install.sh) -ceh -E leftsidebar for me)
  2. Run the Spicetify script to apply Spicetify (spicetify apply/spicetify backup apply, both result in the same error)
  3. Rerun the SpotX script (same as step 1)

At step 3, the script returns an "xpui not found!" error and asks to reinstall Spotify. The Spotify client, SpotX and Spicetify features work, and Spicetify can still be applied; the only problem is that SpotX can't be reapplied or updated without reinstalling Spotify. Interestingly, spicetify backup apply does specifically say it clears the backup, but the error still occurs even when running spicetify apply, which doesn't say anything about that. Honestly, I'm just assuming it's okay to install Spicetify on SpotX (which I might be wrong about) because of the FAQ section in the Windows client, which says it is okay to do so and recommended to install Spicetify on SpotX rather than the other way round. I apologise if I'm making any apparent mistakes, I don't know much about these things.

Edit: It appears that running spicetify apply overwrites all the SpotX patches, while spicetify backup apply doesn't.
