2023.nixcon.org's Issues

Offer public speaker support service

During NixCon 2022 I noticed a divide between speakers. In one camp, you had the people who have clearly spoken to larger audiences before, and in the other you had those that hadn't done anything near that scale yet. I believe we shouldn't stray away from accepting speakers without any public speaking experience, in fact, I'd love to see them at NixCon, since it's these people that still have fresh problems in their heads. 😉

However, I'd also like to keep the quality of the conference high, and I know how frightening it can be to simply be elevated from the floor on a stage, let alone be in front of a large audience. So, I was thinking of offering some public speaking support before, after, and during, NixCon 2023. I was thinking of the following.

  • Host a lecture about public speaking before the event
  • Host a stress-test for the selected speakers the day before the actual event
  • Provide constructive feedback about the presentation after the event
  • Provide constructive feedback to their slide decks
  • Provide constructive feedback to demo presentations

Note, that I don't have a lot of public speaking experience myself, but I do have stage experience, and I've noticed both kinds of stress feel the same way, and the remedies work the same. It also ties into issue #6 i.m.o. Because, if we can support entry-level talks, and we have a support structure in place, we can still be assured we'll meet a certain bar of quality.

What do you think?

Network / Wifi

Will be WPA2-PSK, because the alternative would be WPA2-EAP, which is possibly too complicated to get going.

There will be LAN for the Video-Team, and possibly for the speakers. We don't currently have a plan for LAN in the common rooms.

We'll have enough global address space for everyone. Our uplink to the WLAN will be 10 Gbps, we're not sure how well the WLAN scales though.

Swag

  • Who does the art?

    • community call for art/logo?
    • Avocadoom & megfault are willing to do some work for the website, we can likely piggy back on the logo variant they come up with
  • T-Shirts cost somewhere between 10 and 25€ I guess? Where do we get them? What do we put on them? Who does the art?

    • Freddruck
    • MRMCD gets their T-Shirts from Caritas, 5.79€ + 7% tax + printing mask (each ~20€)
      • 18€ per shirt all in all, front and back printed
      • braack has contact details
  • Mugs probably are around 5-8€ each. What do we want to print on them?

    • Flokli might have an old invoice
    • flyeralarm

Walk through the venue

We should do a walk-through of the venue to note and talk about some things.

Things to talk about:

  • Room division (where will be food, chatting, talks, hacking, ...)
  • AV Setup & requirements check (probably with someone from the VOC @hexchen ?!?)
  • Take pictures of all the rooms, hallways, blueprints, ... we should document as much as we might need during the further preparation
  • What else?!?

Organise catering and drinks

The current budget aims for ~20€+ of catering (meaning breakfast sweets/buns/… and lunch) for each day of the conference. 200 attendees for the conference days, 100 for the hackday.

If we need more money per person the ticket sale price goes up by that amount.

Options:
* Indian (provides glutenfree diets)
* Thai
* Currys

  • Fridges
  • Lunch
    • Where?
      • Radiesschen
      • Studentenwerk?!
      • Mondo?
      • Where else?
  • Breakfast-snack
    • Coffee, tea, drinks
    • Coffee cart / someone paid to do the work
    • Sweet bits and pieces
    • someone has to prepare breakfast, coffee, tea, .... do we want to hire someone? What does it cost? Where do we get that? Do we do it ourselves with a few volunteers?

Unclear license

Could you please clarify under which license this code is?

Insurance

We need some kind of insurance for the event. @braack mentioned that he has a couple of quotes available. We should decide on this as soon as we have the dates confirmed.

Paid training / workshops?

We had a request last year to run a training workshop. What would be the conditions?

I can see two possible variations:

  1. The workshop is for-profit. It happens outside of the venue, potentially a day before. In that case, NixCon could advertise its existence.
  2. The workshop is part of the conference. In that case, it would be included in the price of the ticket. We would reserve a training room. The presenter would be free to advertise their course outside of the conference.

Maybe some other proposals?
