agon-cpm2.2's Introduction

My name is Aleksandr Sharikhin

I'm doing software engineering for living(currently using Rust mostly) but this GitHub profile contains mostly my hobby projects for retrocomputers.

Here will be some guide for some my repos.

CP/M related stuff

  • For Agon Light computer is located here
  • For ZXUno and Spectrum +3 with divMMC and +3e firmware is here. Initially, it was only for ZXUno but now it have possiblity to be built with classic ZX Spectrum screen driver
  • For Karabas Pro ZX Spectrum compatible computer located is here. Most funny fact about it - it have CI on Github Actions for creating public releases.
  • Very quick and dirty made file manager for CP/M. It should be compiled with BDS C and can work on almost any CP/M machine(uses only 8080 mnemonics)

Network stuff for vintage computers

For long time I was mostly known as developer of network tools for ZX Spectrum compatible computers.

And main entry point for this code was my zx-net-tools repository. Work on code located in this repository mostly freezed but I did some replacements:

I did tool for remote loading code to ZX Spectrum compatible computers - Lain. You can use it for real hardware checks when you making cross-platform development.

For Agon Light I did Snail Gopher browser. It's still experimental software but you can use it, explore internals and develop some new stuff using it

Also I did some experiments for creating new firmware for ESP8266 for using it as offload tcp/ip stack. This version was used in MSX's BadCat Wifi cart.

Kinda Games

  • Rokky simple Rock's'Diamonds game for Agon Light. I'm using it like test site for Agon Development.
  • Daddy of prev. game - Rocks And Ghosts for Jupiter Ace(with 16k ram pack). Once I've let that every platform should have Boulder Dash like game. So I did it for Jupiter Ace
  • Lost Donation Box Incident pseudo-Bullet Hell game for ZX-Evolution with TSConf firmware. Game can be downloaded here(also here's video with game play). There's version with emulator for Windows. Emulator works fine under Wine.
  • Sinty Snoki is proof-of-concept game. It's a snake game that uses MIDI out of ZX Spectrum 128 for playing background music. For screenshots and downloadable version check itch.io page of game

Other still usable retrocomputer's stuff

  • W65C02S Basic for Cerberus 2100 and Cerberus 2080 computers. It's custom port of Microsoft's Basic for 6502 processors. My first ever experience with 6502 assembly.
  • Agon Music Track Compiler - very strange way for creating music for Agon Light. You should write text file that will contains notes and compile it into song, using simple compiler.

Supporting me

You can support me with two ways now:

  • Using Ko-Fi service - easy for you and me way(also there's some dev.log)

  • Using Etherium crypto: 0x13105803B79CF6541867d137fDbdf942d0bDA863

agon-cpm2.2's Issues

"ed" quits immediately

I imagine this might fall under the "some terminal things may not work" caveat, but, if in case its useful feedback: ed (on disk #2) quits, either when you try to edit a new file or an existing file.

Unable to find binary cpm.bin

There doesn't appear to be a compiled cmp.bin file anyhere in the repository. I'm not a software developer, I just want to try stuff.

Where can I find cpm.bin?

I can't find cpm.bin in the repo or should I build it myself? How do I do to build it if that is the case.

Garbage keyboard input when using autoexec.txt

I'm running MOS/VDP 1.04rc2 on an AgonLight 2.
I noticed that there is garbage input (control characters) when starting cpm from the autoexec.txt file, which looks like this:
SET KEYBOARD 1
VDU 22 16
CD cpm
LOAD cpm.bin
RUN

so I end up with an A> prompt and some (I guess) control characters.

When I do these commands by hand (i.e. on the command line of MOS) then it works fine, when I set up the autoexec.txt file without the ending RUN command I get into the command line, then when typing RUN it works, no extra input characters.

Can you replicate this? Maybe clearing the keyboard input explicitly when booting up would work?

VolksForth issue with CONST/CONIN

We (@uho and @cstrotm) are trying to get VolksForth CP/M (https://github.com/forth-ev/VolksForth/tree/master/8080/CPM) to run on Agon-CPM2.2.

VolksForth works on a wide range of real CP/M hardware and emulators.

On Agon-CPM2.2, it starts, prints out the startup banner, and then gets into problems when reading a key (or checking the status of the keyboard). It seems that Agon-CPM2.2 delivers an endless stream of keystrokes, which crashes the program.

The code executed can be found at

https://github.com/forth-ev/VolksForth/blob/bda78c41f9b559bb5877300c2f065bb673d9b553/sources/cpm/source.fth#L2028

@nihirash Are you aware of any incompatibilities of the BIOS CONST/CONIN interface that we might be able to work around in our code?

Not an issue — just a question

Hello,
sorry that I post this in „issues” but it seems it's the only place I can contact you.

Just two short questions:

  1. Is it possible, using your CPM variant, to access Agon's GPIO lines?
  2. Is it possible to use Agon's graphics (and maybe even sound) under CP/M?

Re 2) — I'm aware CP/M never was „multimedial thing”, but actually why not use graphics/sound with Agon-specific variant, if only there is a way to add some kind of „hooks” in CP/M's API, that won't ruin compatibility with old software?

Bug: Key Bounce

Shift key creates additional characters when attempting to enter a ':'
The problem is only present in the command line, not in MBasic or Wordstar

Unable to compile Turbo Pascal program

Unable to successfully compile any program in Turbo Pascel. I did the simplest program possible, just a Writeln() statement. It says the following:

Compiling
0

And hangs. I have to reboot the device.

Sometimes I will get an error 99.

I am running Console8 VDP version 2.1.0, and Console8 MOS version 2.1.0. Other CPM programs seem ok.

Feature request

Use the new VDP firmware exit terminal feature to exit back to MOS, using a command called "MOS"

Curser Keys in Turbo Pascal not working well

Combined Keys in Terminal (Cursor, Delete and others) are working in Basic and MOS, but not in CP/M (or just very limited).
Mostly, the key is not recognized. Looks like the combined Terminal Keys are not passed to BIOS in a useful and fast way.
Try it in Turbo Pascal or WS.

Further: It would be helpful to emulate other Terminals (with shorter codes) as well.

Enhancement: Support all 15 drives in CP/M via drive images

"The Select Disk function designates the disk drive named in register E as the default disk for subsequent file operations, with E = 0 for drive A, 1 for drive B, and so on through 15, corresponding to drive P in a full 16 drive system."
Can we have more drives please A: to Z:
A: to P: if you want to be CP/M 2.2 Specific

Kermit-80 doesn't recognise ports

The version of Kermit installed with CP/M does start, but it doesn't have any port configuration done to work with the AgonLight2, nor is the port speed setable.
The Agon (by default) can use the usb-c port as a serial connection to another pc, in addition there are the UEXT modules, it should be possible to use both a RS232 MOD & a WiFi MOD to act as a serial device. Possibly more than one RS232 port (using the 5 port UEXT).

This may need to be added to both CP/M and Kermit.
