nhsuk-service-manual-community-backlog's Introduction

NHS digital service manual community backlog

This is a place for teams building NHS or other health and care services to work together and develop the NHS digital service manual.

Working in the open

The community backlog lives on GitHub, in the open where everyone can see and get involved.

It's grouped into 3 areas:

Working together

Join in with the community. It gives you a chance to:

  • collaborate on developing solutions to common design problems
  • share your work, insights and learnings with others
  • get help with your own design and development challenges

Ways to contribute

Anyone can contribute to the community backlog. All you need is a public GitHub account to get started. Most contributions begin with a GitHub issue using one of these templates:

To feedback or share insights on something that already exists:

Regardless of how you choose to contribute, we encourage you to open an issue or feedback as early as possible in the process.

Maintaining the backlog

The service manual team maintains the community backlog. It labels, manages or closes issues in this GitHub repository.

nhsuk-service-manual-community-backlog's Issues

Feedback banner

What

This component is currently being written up to go in the NHS digital service manual. This issue is a placeholder to track discussions.

Here is a link to the component in the frontend library nhsuk/nhsuk-frontend#167

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

2 words or 3?

GOV.UK and PHE use 2 words, as does Jo's Trust. Macmillan uses 3. Needs looking into.

I've raised a ticket in Jira: SS-603.

Healthcare team

Rather than multidisciplinary team.
Recommendation to go to Style Council meeting 19 March 2019.

test

What

Give a brief description of the style, component or pattern you want to propose.

Why

Explain why you think this should be added to the NHS.UK digital service manual.

  • What evidence do you have that it's needed by multiple services across the NHS?
  • What evidence do you have that it meets the needs of the users of those services?
  • Have you checked that it doesn't already exist in the NHS.UK digital service manual?

Anything else

Include links to any examples, research or code to support your proposal, if available.

Symbol for degrees Celsius

We've had some feedback from professionals that we are wrong to leave out the degree symbol.

We need to know if users find the degree symbol helpful or it confuses them.

In all the content we've tested around temperature, we haven't seen users confused when we leave our the degree symbol and none of the users pointed out the lack of the symbol.

We also need to check whether there are any accessibility issues with using the symbol - or any problems with different browsers/devices.

Bouts, episodes, attacks

Raised by 111 team.
For example an 'attack of sinusitis' sounds rather dramatic.

Comments by colleagues:
Context matters.
"Attacks" might be fine in some instances (e.g. asthma attacks), but probably not for things like diarrhoea/vomiting, for example.
Best to avoid these words whenever possible. Often things like "vomited 5 times", "had sinusitis before" work ok.

Summary list

What

Use this issue to discuss the summary list component in the NHS digital service manual

The Summary list component is an established GOV.UK component in use in various GOV services as well as live in the National data opt-out service service.

It is also in use in an alpha service for the "Check your personal details" part of the audit and transparency foundation service/s.

The summary list component is a key element of the GDS pattern to help users to "check answers".

Why

Many transactional services need to have users check data before submission, or check data against a question or criteria, and the summary list is an established component for doing this.

Having the summary list component and related macro would:

  • speed up development
  • ensure services don't have to recreate their own versions/interpretations of this component
  • make it easier for services to build key/value <dl> lists
  • make it easier to make <dl> lists accessible and well structured

Where has this been tested

Across gov. This component has been tested across numerous GOV services and internal case working systems.

In the NHS this has been tested in the national data opt-out service:

  • with 20+ users in various labs
  • as part of remote unmoderated A/B testing with 50 users
  • as part of the live service since October 2018 (thousands of users etc.)
  • as part of three accessibility audits (with 15 people)

It has also been tested in the new frontend in the "Check your personal details" service:

  • with 2 users in a pop-up
  • 5 users in a lab

Issues reported: None

For the audit and transparency set of services I have created a proof of concept fork of the GDS component:

Anus, back passage, bottom, rectum

Latest: published in A to Z April 2019.
Style Council agreed to prioritise this.
We have some research from the chlamydia project and some from health literacy research.
Research currently being reviewed by the live service content team.
