Heya @marcidy!
You are right that alias is an acceptable directive to route requests to "other" directories. The only reason it's not yet been implemented is because there's been no external PR for it and I've been prioritising other work.
I'll add this issue to the backlog, although if you want to see the feature implemented sooner rather than later, I would suggest creating a PR yourself (should be relatively easy to do -- you can look at previous template related PRs for examples).

Great, I'll take a stab at it once I finish some other work. It's going to take me some time to get up to speed to test the changes, since I'm using the last release from ansible-galaxy. Seems like a simple change as you noted.
I just wanted to be sure the change was relevant before sinking that time. Thanks for the quick response!

With the 0.4.0 release (https://github.com/nginxinc/ansible-role-nginx-config/releases/tag/0.4.0) the alias directive is now fully supported in all contexts! 😄
