Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a writer, primarily of fantasy fiction.

I recommend the book American Gods because it is an excellent story with well-realized characters, and also because it serves as an interesting introduction to a variety of religious/mythological symbols across many cultures (mostly Europena and African, but not exclusively). There is a television series based on this book.

My favorite work of Neil Gaiman is Sandman, a series of comic books. The themes of Sandman are similar to those of American Gods: gods and god-like beings in conflict with one another.
