devpod-provider-hetzner's Introduction

Hi there, I'm Simon ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm a Cloud Native engineer and a mentor at the School of Code. I'm based in the beautiful county of Shropshire in the English Midlands.

I'm a comedy nerd who once got a thumbs up from Barry Cryer. I've also recorded at Abbey Road Studios and have a number 9 chart hit with John Otway (and 900 others). I keep bees, love being outside in my garden and enjoy tinkering in my workshop.

I keep an infrequent blog where I talk all things software engineering and developer culture.

๐Ÿ‘ฏ Iโ€™m looking to collaborate on

  • Cloud Native
  • IoT
  • Open Source
  • Things that you're passionate about and need some help
  • Mentoring new engineers

๐ŸŽค Speaking

I've spoken at DevOpsDays, Cloud Native Rejekts, KubeHuddle and KubeCon. I'm always open to other speaking opportunities - please contact me if you would like me to speak at your event.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Ask me about

  • Cloud development environments
  • Beekeeping
  • Cloud Native computing

โšก Fun

I once did standup comedy. And didn't die.

devpod-provider-hetzner's Issues

Optional volumes

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

Can we have volumes be optional? Right now when I create a server it also makes an additional volume for storage. Most of the time projects can easily fit on machine with 40 GB of disk space.

Improve error messages

Bug description

When creating a workspace:
image

I believe I had a somewhat generic error message ("(Server error)") before.

This turned out to be:

image

What irritates me is the "Usage" printout here - could this be improved?

Steps to reproduce

Hard to reproduce, because this seems to happen when Hetzner has issues

Expected behaviour

Give a better error message.

No response

Anything else?

No response

Use ssh keys to connect to machine

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

Every hetzner server created produces a email with the root password. It would be nice if ssh keys would be used for that

Describe the behaviour you'd like

Generate short time ssh keys to not annoy my admins

Describe alternatives you've considered

Additional context

Use Hetzner Docker Image

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

Use docker image to speed up instance creation

Describe the behaviour you'd like

I think we can use Docker-CE image and get rid of get.docker.com and so on to have an general faster setup

Snapshots

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

Would it be possible to add snapshots. I'm not 100% sure how it could work. When you don't use machine for X days we create a snapshot and then once you want to use it again we spin a new server from that snapshot. Hetzner charges for machines by the hour even if they are not active I think spinning a machine from snapshot would be faster than provisioning a new one.

If you find this option interesting I can help you figure out the workflow.
