Technologies

The codebase is written in Kotlin language with Jetpack Compose as a primary UI framework.
In addition, the following technologies are used in the project:

  • Compose Paging - for displaying paginated UI lists.
  • Coil - for loading images.
  • Compose Navigation - for navigating between features.
  • Kotlin Coroutines - for concurrency.
  • Dagger - for dependency injection.
  • Retrofit - for networking.
  • Room - for persistence and offline mode.

Architecture

The project implements a scalable multi-module architecture that aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Separation of concerns - strict isolation and separation of logic between features for easier testability and maintainability of a codebase.
  • Scalability - the architecture is applicable for projects that use hundreds or thousands Gradle/Bazel modules.
  • Dependency graph optimization - allows keeping a developer productivity on a decent level by preventing long build times and ensuring efficient incremental builds.

All the project modules could be separated into 3 types:

  • Feature modules - which hold a logic related to a specific feature and consist of API and Impl modules. Former are framework-agnostic and hold lightweight interfaces as feature entry points.
  • Library modules - commonly used logic by other features.
  • Injector modules - modules that build a dependency graph of the app. E.g. app module.

Everything depends on common module

Hey @Morfly !
I loved your presentation on Android Worldwide. I love how every dependency is so well scoped and the modules are loosely coupled.

The only problem I can see right now is that literally every module depends on common. I feel like when we have a new feature request we will introduce new Repositories and new domain models, but the repository and the models will only be really used in one or two feature modules.

Because the repositories and the domain models all live under the common module, every change to them will recompile the entire app, right? If so do you think it would be a good idea to separate the common modules based on the domain models, eg:

banking app

  • transactions module with Transaction domain model and TransactionRepository
  • user module with User domain model and UserRepository.

These modules could work like common, but only those modules would depend on them that really need the models and repositories.

Does this make sense, or would this be unnecessary?

Can we use Hilt with this architecture

We are looking at an architecture very similar to this and one question where had doubts was will we be able to use Hilt properly with this architecture ?
