Are you suggesting that we write code to generate basin masks online? Or
that we read from previously created masks?

We currently have python scripts in tools which create basin masks from
scratch.

We can discuss tomorrow at our weekly diagnostics meeting, Alistair's
office, 2:30pm.

I am simply transitioning our google doc into github issues. We can
comment and close there if necessary.

We have a Python code that generates basin masks automatically. This is done in the pre-processing step.

@adcroft-gfdl says it would be trivial and useful to Fortran-ize this code to generate the basin masks online and output them to the static file.

@StephenGriffies sees opportunity where having the masks online would useful for physical parameteriziations, e.g. shelves.
