Some users don't want their code to print messages, or they might want to log stuff into a txt file instead. You can make it optional with a kwarg or use https://docs.julialang.org/en/v1/stdlib/Logging/

When you generate the file structure on your computer using PkgTemplates.jl, you might get an error trying to push it because the repo is not empty. In that case, the right way would be to merge changes beforehand, and the wrong way (which also works) is to just do a force push: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5509543/how-do-i-properly-force-a-git-push

Have you tried using HashCode2014.jl to read it again after writing it to file?

and not in /docs/src/.

My best guess is, the docs/build/ subfolder existed before you added this to .gitignore. It contains lots of heavy HTML pages with frequent updates, so what you want to do is remove them from your main branch and leave it to CI to push those to the gh-pages branch for website generation. These are local editor parameters, you don't want to impose them on your users or co-developers

I don't know what that is but it has no place here.
Basically, you want to ignore big files / files that never change / files that are useless for another package developer and for the user
