gmenu2x's Issues

[FR] In the Default theme (and Nsdark theme), replace the Bebas Kai font with the Bebas Neue Bold (2014) font to add support for Cyrillic (Russian) characters.

[Feature Request] In the Default theme, replace the Bebas Kai font with the Bebas Neue Bold (2014) font to add support for Cyrillic (Russian) characters.

The Default theme currently uses the Bebas Kai font. Version 1.002. This font has 429 glyphs. This font does not support Cyrillic (Russian) characters:
cyrr01

The same author has the Bebas Neue Family (2014) font family and specifically the Bebas Neue Bold font. Version 1.003.
This font has an almost identical style. This font has 486 glyphs. The main difference is the presence of Cyrillic (Russian) characters:
cyrr02

This font is also licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1.

The appearance of Cyrillic (Russian) characters in the Default theme font, in my opinion, would not be unnecessary.
At the same time, the overall appearance and style of the theme does not suffer:
eng

Yes, this does not solve the problem of the lack of many other characters (Greek or CJK characters, for example), but it is better than nothing.

Disable Y to parent folder

I've found out that selectorbrowser=false makes .. folder up entry hide.
But I still have "Y to parent folder", something like that. I would like to lock this menu entry into this roms folder. Disabling going upper than selectordir value.

Scrollbar in the middle of the screen.

Just bought a Powkiddy v90 one month ago and replace the SD for a brand new one. At first it worked nicely but someday appeared a straight line across the screen. My first thought some kind of hardware error but in the scrollable UIs it seems to be the scroll bar or change with it. I tried to move it to the side of the screen in the options and search for solutions on the internet but can't find a solution. Looks like a stupid request but this line keeps when open the games and buggs the hell out of me. Can someone help me with this?

[Q] How realistic is it to make the initial console setup translatable?

How realistic, resource-consuming and/or time-consuming/difficult is it to make the initial console setup translatable?
I mean those "first run" setup steps where the user is asked about console model, screen-orientation/position and if the main partition must be extended and stuff.

File about.txt may need some clarification.

The about.txt file first labels and separates the L and R buttons into L1, L2 and R1, R2:

	Line 13: * L1(TB), R1(TA): Switch between sections left/right or PageUp/PageDown on lists;
	Line 14: * L2, R2: Fast Decrement/Increment of selected value;

but at the same time it’s just L and R further down the list:

	Line 19: * SELECT + L: Volume control;
	Line 20: * SELECT + R, BRIGHTNESS: Change screen brightness;

I think it’s worth continuing to specify them as L1 and R1, respectively (since it's just them, and not L2 and R2).

Yes, I know that not all consoles have separate R1, R2 and L1, L2 buttons, only simple L and R (and that some don't have any of L and R at all), but since such a clarification has already begun, it is worth continuing do it.
In addition, this will also help avoid confusing them with the LEFT and RIGHT buttons (I have already seen such a precedent).

It may also be worth making a clarification "(Bittboy's in round brackets)" to explain the appearance of the mysterious (TA) and (TB) buttons in the list, in the same way as it is done on the page: https://github.com/TriForceX/MiyooCFW/wiki/Making-Games.

[FR] Make the about.txt file multilingual and translatable.

[Feature Request] Make the about.txt file multilingual and translatable.

I remember that I already suggested this in discord once, but I will repeat it here:
Why not make the file https://github.com/MiyooCFW/gmenu2x/blob/master/about.txt multilingual and translatable?
And make it so that, depending on the set language of GMenu2X, when user click on the “About” link, a localized version of this file would be displayed (and if there is no such localized file, then the English version of the file would be displayed).
I consider this necessary because the file contains useful information about the hot keys used in the menu. Essentially this is a short guide.
Yes, I know that no one ever reads instructions. But it won't be completely useless.

Something similar can be seen here, for example:

Autostart problem

Enabling autostart in option change my chosen theme to other theme every single time..

We should make it harder to delete menu entries and sections (or easier to undo)

I've accidentally deleted things in Gmenunx, and other people keep asking where all of their menu entries went on reddit, e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/pfo637/why_isnt_the_emulators_icon_not_showing_or/

I have a couple of ideas for how to make this better:

  • We could just hide the entries instead of deleting them. Maybe prefix with a . and then ensure that Gmenunx ignores dotfiles. (It might already, I haven't checked yet.)
    • And then add a way to unhide individual entries, or maybe just a single "unhide everything" option
  • Allow recent changes to be undone
  • Make separate modes for editing the menu vs just using the device. In the regular usage mode, you can't delete or edit menu entries, and in the editing mode you can't launch games. It'd have to be pretty simple to get out of the editing mode, though - maybe just press B to exit or something.
  • Don't allow deleting menu sections with links still in them (require that the user delete all of the links in the section first if they really want to delete it)
    • Done - See #5
  • Require two buttons pressed simultaneously, maybe A+Y to confirm deletion of things

I don't know what the best answer is, and some of those could be combined, but I just feel like it's too easy to accidentally delete entire menu sections right now.

I might work on this sometime soon.

(Obviously any improvements here could be up-streamed to other Gmenunx / Gmenu2x repositories, but I'm using Miyoo, so this is where I'd start.)

[Q/FR] Default theme font: experimenting with it.

What I always didn't like about the current Default theme (tho I generally like this theme) is how "soapy" the GNU Unifont font looks.
So I took a closer look at the size of one "pixel" of the font (that's 64x64 of somethings) and scaled the font by 112.5% so that the size of that one "pixel" became 72x72 (because why not).

As a result, the letters became a bit clearer/sharper (in my eyes):
01
02
03

But they also became a bit larger.
Therefore, I armed myself with epic patience (FontForge ><) and compressed (manually) the letters of the Russian alphabet (this can be seen in picture No. 2-2).

Now I'm wondering if it's worth continuing.
Theoretically, it doesn’t take that long to compress the basic Latin alphabet (and basic punctuation).
But as for the extended Latin alphabet, that’s a different story. I would not like to study all the letters, there are too many of them and they are too crafty. Possibly only those that have already been used in existing translations.
(Of course, this does not apply to any of hieroglyphs. But they are naturally compact (I think).)

So, is it worth continuing or not?

Add option to rearrange items

Actually is a pain to reorder items, you have to rename the filename to match the file-system order, so adding an option/variable to the shortcut file (order=X) would be more efficient.

Example:

title=NES
description=Fceux Emulator
order=3
...

Selection Box Overlaps Boxart

Hello! I was recently working on a custom theme with boxart for my games, but I noticed the selection bar in selector.cpp spans the whole width of the screen (it's bound to listRect.w, which is in turn bound to the screen resolution. If boxart is enabled, this causes the selection box to overlap the boxart picture. To remedy this, another configuration option could be created to override this, perhaps selBarWidth or similar, and have the width of the box default to listRect.w if such an option isn't found.

https://github.com/MiyooCFW/gmenunx/blob/b2ca041a4e2e613bb8b0c61b0879fac6a0afb94e/src/selector.cpp#L111

Some GMenu2X messages are missing from the translation file

While I was playing with the settings, checking that the translation parts matched each other and stuff, I noticed several untranslated (not translatable) messages:

  1. Time settings screen called up by long pressing on "X" button - these are the lines "SW Clock" and "Set system's software clock":
    s001

  2. Message "This directory is empty" when launching selector browser if the assigned directory is empty and changing directories is not allowed:
    s002

  3. Message "Add to Favorites" in the selector browser on any of the files inside the assigned directory:
    s003

  4. The message itself "Screenshot saved" when pressing "SELECT" + "START" buttons. (I can't take a screenshot of this message)

If to add these lines (and their translation) to the translation file by yourself, the translation appears.
Since they are not difficult to reach while going through the settings, it would be nice to add them to the translate.txt file permanently.

[Q] Is it possible to use screen space more efficiently to display settings and messages?

Is it possible to use screen space more efficiently to display settings and messages?

  1. In the settings (any, perhaps with the exception of the "Skin Colors" sub-settings), is it possible to divide the screen not 50%-50% for a variable name and its value, but 60%-40% (or something)?
    What is this for: on the left side we are constantly trying to stuff in almost the whole “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” comparable amount of text, on the right side we usually have something like “OFF”, “12”, “AUTO”, etc. ( the longest value here is probably the name of the wallpaper).

  2. Can messages (especially 'hint' messages) be two-line (auto split or with help of \n symbol manually inserted into the text of the message) rather than single-line?
    What is this for: well, same. Often the text is quite long and tends to extend beyond the screen in both directions.

Add configuration option to hide application and games sections

So the story goes like this: I want to give my kiddypow to a family member, but this particular family member is not really that into these kind of devices. So my goal is to add a option to hide the "Applications" and "Games" sections. This will simplify because it will then only show Settings and Emulators, which will make my life easier because I will be the one having to maintain the device. You know... family and computers...

I will be working on the code myself, so this issue is more of a "what do you guys think" issue.
