Ok so this is the way i managed to make this work with the built-in HDMI + USB Adapter:

This are my laptop specs:
Acer Nitro 5
Intel Core i5-11400H
16 GB RAM
RTX 3050 Ti
Windows 11

Ok so I installed the latest driver version (V2.0.1.7.3) and I'm currently using one monitor through the HDMI port duplicating my laptop screen and a second monitor through the USB Adapter in extending mode. In order to make it work I have to plug both monitors and exit the USB Windows Display program (if it's already running), then open the program again as Administrator and that's how both monitor will show different content. (It's important to duplicate the laptop screen to the monitor connected to the HDMI port (that's gonna be your principal monitor), I can't get to work to extend all 3 screens.

Some extra info:

  • My "Manage 3D settings" configuration in Nvidia control panel is set to Auto-select
  • In my windows Graphics settings, "Windows USB Display" is set to use Power Saving (Intel UHD Graphics)
  • It DOESN'T work if you set all 3 screens to extend (the one connected to the adapter wont show the cursor)
  • There is some delay in the monitor connected to the adapter and if there's something moving on screen (like a Youtube video playing or dragging a program window there'll be even more delay)
  • Even if you set the close the lid configuration to do nothing, if I close the laptop then it will only detect two screens (the two external monitors) and the one connected to the USB Adapter won't show the cursor.
  • I opened the driver setup as Administrator.

I think that's it for now, maybe there's some delay but for the use that I'm going to give to that monitor, I think I can live with that until a solution is found, I hope this can help somebody with the same problem using built-in HDMI + USB Adapter.

@rand3920
In which setting option in the Nvidia Control Panel need to change global settings to "auto select"? Can you provide a photo?
This will fix the problem? USB display and the built-in HDMI will be working simultaneously?
Did this work for you?

Hi @TempleV and @pfjarschel
ss

I simply changed the "preferred graphics setting" setting in my nvidia control panel to "auto select" then restarted computer and it has been working for me since.

I am using my laptops display, a 4k monitor with my laptops hdmi port and a 1080p monitor with my laptops 3.0 usb port(using usb to hdmi converter and USB display driver). So 3 total monitors working at the same time flawlessly although the 1080p monitor has some mouse lag by milliseconds it plays videos and stuff fine.

@mschief148 sometimes it happens to me, my workaround is to plug only the usb converter and execute the program and then connect my second monitor through HDMI, that way it'll work showing the cursor in the usb converter screen. (make sure you are mirroring your laptop screen to the HDMI one and extending the USB converter one, if you extend all 3 it won't work)

Can confirm it doesn't work if there is a monitor plugged in in the laptop hdmi port. My setup is similar to OP's, but with an AMD integrated graphics card instead of Intel.

Switching stuff in the Nvidia control panel didn't solve this, BUT, if the laptop HDMI port is free, the USB-HDMI only works if it's set to integrated gpu.

So, in short, here's the situation:

  • Only one monitor plugged to USB-HDMI: works if the gpu config is set to auto-select or integrated graphics
  • One monitor plugged to USB-HDMI, and another monitor plugged into laptop's HDMI: Doesn't work no matter the setting.

@rand3920 I would also really like to know if the steps ins your comment solved the problem to you, because no luck here.

Edit: Just tested the adapter in another PC (with only one GPU), and works as expected (for a total of 3 monitors, one of them being a tablet drawing screen), so it's not a faulty unit.

rand3920 avatar rand3920 commented on August 11, 2024

@lucascsouza
have you tried closing your laptop with your phone plugged in through the usb port that you currently have your hdmi to usb converter plugged into?

if your phone stops charging when you close the lid then you just have to change some settings in your computer to stop disabling usb ports when closing the lid.

Also theres a specific setting for your computer if using windows to do nothing when closing the lid

@rhuebner76 Hmm, that's weird, did you make sure you're duplicating your laptop screen to the monitor connected to the HDMI and not extending all 3 monitors?

I get the no cursor error when I extend the 3 monitors, however, there's always a delay when I get it to work.

rhuebner76 avatar rhuebner76 commented on August 11, 2024

@juan9900, smh, yes, I was extending the desktop to the 3rd monitor which was the purpose of having the adapter. At this point it is no longer an issue as I have moved to using the Mini-DP in conjunction with the HDMI port and I have my multiple display setup operational again.

With the latest WinUSB application (v2.0.1.7.3) I confirm, that it doesn't crash with Win8ScreenDriverImpl exception on my multi-gpu laptop, but other issues are present.
One of the issues is slow response:

  • about 1 fps of frame rate
  • mouse cursor is absent on USB display
I tried to switch between modes in Windows Graphics Settings for WinUSB app, like power-saving (integrated GPU) and high-performance (descrete GPU), but nothing helps - slow frame-rate and no mouse cursor still.
