Windows Server and SQL Server 2008 R2 end of support planning

This workshop is archived and is no longer being maintained. Content is read-only.

Many customers have huge on-premises footprints of Windows Server and SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2, but these products are rapidly approaching End of Support (EOS). This session is designed to help customers understand the risks of running unsupported software and presents great options for using EOS to modernize in Azure or on-premises.

Abstracts

Workshop

This workshop only has a whiteboard design session at this time, please see below for abstract.

Whiteboard design session

In this whiteboard design session, you will work with a group to look at the process of migrating workloads to Azure.

At the end of this whiteboard design session, you will leave with the information needed to develop a solid migration plan to keep mission-critical apps and data protected as they are transitioned and modernized. Topics covered will include how to get an inventory of a 2008 server environment, how to categorize 2008 workloads and evaluate the best option for each category, migration and upgrade tools available, TCO analysis tools, offers available from Microsoft to leverage existing licenses and innovations of recent product updates, licensing and technologies.

Hands-on lab

There is no hands-on lab for the workshop.

mcw-windows-server-and-sql-server-2008-r2-end-of-support-planning's Issues

Content update scheduled

This workshop is scheduled for an update. Please review the contents of this repo and comment on this issue with suggested updates. All suggestions must be added to this issue by EOD 11/9/2018.

Add dbcompat consideration?

I noticed we're missing information about DBCompat and our slight change in focus to certify to a compatibility level rather than a specific engine version and/or platform (on-prem vs. Azure). More info here: https://aka.ms/dbcompat

Customer objections. 6 questions asked, 5 answered. I filled in question # 6, please complete it.

June 2019 - content update

@mwasham @Jeff-Opsgility

WDS - trainer guide

Need to go through documents and check your bullet formatting please.
In some sections your have dot bullets, others you have numbers. In both cases, some indent to an a. b. c. - in other places they indent into a i. ii. iii

FYI - bulleted sentences do not have ending punctuation unless there are multiple sentences, a question mark, or a colon. I've removed punctuation throughout.

WDS - student guide

Please check bullet formatting in the Design a proof of concept solution section. You go from dot bullets to alphabet bullets. Whatever you correct to in the trainer guide, please do the same here.

Changes to presentation components

• Remove Velostrata as acquired by Google
• I thought TSO Logic was a partner now, it is missing
• Refactor is inaccurate – it doesn’t have to be first party PaaS to do this. It can in fact be utilizing Infra as code and this is a far more commons scenario – i.e. Terraform with ansible or chef tied into the CI/CD pipeline and releases.
• Re-architect and refactor are confusing IMO. I personally believe using App Service, Infra as Code or Containers fits these descriptions. Modernising traditional apps can be done with containers (.net or Java) or Infra as code. Also we are talking about AKS only – no inclusion for openshift, DC/OS, Docker EE or other third party container management solution?
• Rebuild is talking about first party azure PaaS only. A lot of customers will look at cloud foundry as an alternate solution
• Optimize – BCDR talks about VM and SQL backup only. What happens in the instance that they customer utilizes a container based solution or cloud foundry? Also Backup is mentioned here only – where is the DR portion? Whether through ASR, resilient build of architecture or 3rd party
• Slide 30 misspelling of “eligible”

WDS - trainer presentation (PPT)

Hello. I made several formatting changes to the PPT, renamed it to follow current naming conventions, and uploaded the new file to GitHub. Please make sure to use my PPT deck to update what's below so we don't lose my updates.

Slide 9 - images need to be flat (not several boxes) and alt-text needs to explain it in one box. There's alt-text for the cloud and the building, but not what it's supposed to mean. I've flattened the image, please fill in the alt-text and describe what it's depicting.
Slide 10 - missing alt-text
Slide 11 - missing alt-text
Slide 19 - missing alt-text
Slide 21 - missing alt-text - Notes say: Update to use Extended Security Updates & Add TCO calc (I think that's from our last meeting)
Slide 22 - 29 Images need to be flat & add alt-text
Slide 30 - presenter notes say remove premium assurance??
Slide 34 - presenter notes say Region/country...not sure what that means. I changed your objection to countries or regions per CELA, was that a meeting note?
Slide 35 - I added this one. You asked 6 customer objections but only answered 5. Need to fill in answer for this one too.

Please change folder name to Whiteboard design session on the main page (from WDS).
We don't use the acronym until inside that folder.
