Mentorship program design doc

A well-designed mentorship program can be incredibly useful to the experience of an exstitute participant, and we have a really rich ecosystem of smart folks who could help:
https://metagov.pubpub.org/directory

However, the value of a mentorship program can vary greatly depending on its design. When you think back to other places in life where you gather mentorship (e.g. undergrad advising, PhD advising, corporate mentorship programs, professional society mentorship programs, even manager<=>report relationship in jobs), why were some relationships more useful than others? Is there anything we can do beyond simple matchmaking that would lead to a higher success rate?

In particular some open questions:

  • Values: what are the core values that we want to promote and what type of culture are we building towards?
  • Coaching: that informs what kind of coaching we may want to provide to mentors.
  • Structure: What structures work best to build trust between mentor & mentee (e.g. regular 1-1's, cohort activities)?
  • Discovery+Matchmaking: How do we best match mentor & mentee?
  • Success criteria: What defines a "good" program? What are "bad" outcomes?

I'll gather thoughts in this thread and use that to inform a working doc where we can design this together. Thanks!

Develop budget estimate

As part of the fundraising + business development working group (BDWG), I wanted to flag that we probably shouldn't start until we have a sense of how much funding is actually needed. A few questions to get us started:

  1. how much does accreditation cost?
  2. do we need funding to build out any tooling, website, etc?
  3. do we need to pay any of the task owners?
  4. any other funding needs I didn't include?

Also, separately, two logistical questions we should start thinking about, but can answer ad-hoc:

  • who should be doing the pitching (presumably not me)?
  • who should we pitch (DON'T ANSWER THIS HERE - imo, this should go in a private google doc)?

First meeting to establish ways of working

In order to proceed, we will need to establish some norms, rhythms, and ways of working. Let's use this issue to plan an agenda for a first meeting. Feel free to add:

When should this meeting occur?
Please fill in availability at: https://www.when2meet.com/?16657925-TX6Gq
Proposed length of 1 hour.

Where will we meet?

What should we discuss?

  • Check in: introductions and intention-setting
  • Rhythms of work: how often should we meet, and to what end?
  • Tooling: Github, Jitsi, When2meet, GDocs, Slack? Do we have a GDocs folder?
  • Initial goals and timeline
  • If time, collaboratively add issues to this repo to hold space for discussions and tasks.
  • Other proposed agenda items?
