memphistechnology.org's Issues

Discussion Item: In-House Organization

Is there enough in-house organization to help all the groups do consistent planning & scheduling and getting big talks organized?
Suggest demonstrating that process and how it helps you build a network and grow your skills. “We should write this up”
We need to tell the story (on the blog) about how meet ups help people level up.
“getting started” pages for all groups, and an event where all groups do something in unison.

This item is more of a grab bag :allthethings: to help us identify:

  • Pooling and sharing resources to help the smaller groups get what they want done
  • Organizing what those resources are in an easy to create|read|update format
  • Understanding the Meta and harnessing it

It does overlap with #65, but focuses more on larger organizational issue (internal & outreach).

Discussion Item: Metrics

@gpspake brought up the idea of coming up with metrics to help us have a firmer grasp of what our attendance numbers are for our meetups and other associated events.

  • For formality's sake, what kind of metrics would we want to track/record?
  • For past big events, are those numbers available ( e.g. tickets sold, actual attendees ) for marketing/reference purposes?
  • For meetups, do we just want a simple head count, or would it be helpful to tie numbers to actual people ( i.e. for outreach purposes )?

Discussion Item: SWOT Analysis

@bradmontgomery brought up a good point at the 6/22 meeting about foreseeable issues regarding public|private funding concerns mixed with increasing number of parties requesting a share of those funds. I would like to open up a discussion and document possible [O]pportunities and [T]hreats in which we should be mindful and our collective [S]trengths and [W]eaknesses to respond to those opportunities and threats.

Help Wanted: A HOWTO on adding new content to this site

Per conversations in Slack, I'm looking to prove out the basic "write something in Markdown, submit a PR, get it merged and deployed" workflow and then write it up as a blog post page for this site.

Anyone who wants to help write it or at least prod me into getting it done is welcome to chime in :)

Question: Contributing to MTF

What would you like to contribute? Drop us an email or join our discussion list. We are an open organization and would love to hear your feedback on what we are doing right, and what we could do better.

Should we remove discussion list and add link to Slack? Can we provide a list of suggestions for possible ways to contribute? Do we even have a formalized list of such ways?

( In light of recent discussions, it seems to be a good time to revisit this particular question? )

Add calls to action to the website for new posts and code contributions

Not to say that you should actually be accepting surprise blog posts submitted by randos on PRs.

But! I go to the site and I don't immediately grok that it's driven by a github repo that I could conceivably add code to.

@brob - UX ideas here? I wouldn't mind a FORK THIS ON GITHUB ribbon but maybe you have classier ideas.

newsletter subscribe 404

Is the MemTech "newsletter" a thing?

Both the form at https://memphistechnology.org/newsletter-signup/ and the form in the footer to subscribe return 404ish errors for me.

If the newsletter is not an active thing, maybe we should remove that page and footer widget.

Revisiting the Past: Outreach discussion

Essentially :allthethings:

  • Can we get people in the community talking to people outside the community
  • Find one person in corporations we want
  • CIO of Memphis talked with Joe and Brian
  • Bryan will work on some collateral

Do we know that "one person" or know the person who does?
How did the City of Memphis talk(s) go? What did they cover?
Do we have that "collateral"? Media | Press kits, etc?
