rikaikun's Issues

I don't like the red "On" overlay

It's right next to my Gmail checker icon, which becomes red when I have new
messages. So when Rikaikun is enabled, my eye always wonders toward the red,
but that just means the extension is enabled. I think the red color creates
a sense of urgency, call me paranoid.

cannot use rikaikun in input text field and textarea

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. type japanese in a textarea
2. mouseover with rikaikun enabled
3. no tooltip :(

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I'd like rikaikun to work over type text in input and textarea field. like
rikaichan does. it is very useful what chatting in japanese with a friend. lets
say I use skype which does not have anything like rikaikun. I created a very
simple webpage (http://box.somekool.net) only to display a big textarea to
paste kanji and use rikai(chan/kun)

but unfortunatelly, it still does not work with rikaikun

Translation bubble appears under bookmarklet floating windows

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Enable rikaikun.
2. Add any of the following bookmarklets to your bookmarks bar: TBUZZ,
Social.com, Bit.ly. (They are used for social bookmarking).

http://bit.ly/pages/tools/sidebar

3. Open a page with a lot of Japanese text.
4. Click the bookmarklet
5. Point at some japanese text next to the floating window generated by the
bookmarklet.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Rikaikun bubble should appear above all page content, including floaters.
Instead, the Rikaikun bubble appears below the floating window.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Rikaikun 0.8

Bump z-index to improve compability with other extensions

If you bump z-index of content from 7777 to 99992 (the same as for Google
Dictionary (by Google)
the it will probably be more compatible with other extensions eg EasyReader
(https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/boamfheepdiallipiieadpmnklbhadhc)
since the content should always be on top of other content...

Couldn't hurt to make it higher?

loop of rikaikun after a while

I start my browser and activate rikaikun right from the beginning.
It works great for some hours.
Then, rikaikun does not display anything when mouse hovering on japanese be
it on already opened tabs or new tabs.
If I look at my task manager I see that a google chrome thread is consuming
all the CPU allocated to the thread. Since I have a core2duo it's not
really a problem as it consumes only one core and I don't feel it.
If I kill the process and go back to google chrome it tells me that
rikaikun crashed and propose a button to restart it.
After restarting it, it works again for a few hours.

I'm using chrome 4.1.249.1045 unknown (42898) and rikaikun 0.8 on vista.
I also use the extensions:
Chrome Stylist - バージョン: 2.0.2
Evernote ウェブクリッパー - バージョン: 3.0.8.320
Japanese Word of the Day - バージョン: 1.22
AdBlock - バージョン: 1.4.12
I have gmail and facebook always opened and also a tab with kanjibox (a
facebook application to learn kanji). Then, the usual random surf.
I could not really pin point a scenario which would make this behaviour
happen so far.

Various first comment no select issues with text in form elements.

An example is at: http://blog.livedoor.jp/kyu3_2/archives/51366451.html

The comment box at the bottom has labels in the form and then text. I'm not
sure why this is a problem since it should fit into the previous exceptions
I've included.

The radio button text is another problem since the text comes after an empty
<input> type tag which I guess behaves strangely.

Keyboard shortcut to toggle rikaikun

Currently, you have to click a button to turn rikaichan on and off. Some
people like keyboard shortcuts, so I think I will make one.

Besides, the original had one, it was even configurable. The maturity of the
firefox platform definitely shows.

Add title support for buttons.

Right now, since webkit doesn't do the hot parsing of button text, they don't
get translated. But I can treat them like title text which is probably good
as well.

I'll have to figure out what to do if an object has both title text and inner
text that I want to translate.

Highlighting messes with user highlighting ability a bit.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Enable rikaikun.
2. Hover over a translatable word.
3. try to highlight that word manually.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Should start highlighting.
Instead you try to move the current highlight.

Use the wiki to create some basic documentation about the project. It's

Better support for `<select>` and `<option>` widgets

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go to any site that has drop down menus.
2. Mouse over the drop down menu options (nothing shows up).

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
For firefox it will show the output for content in drop down menus. Rikaikun on
the other hand will not.

Can't Load Dictionary Files Like in Rikaichan

Rikaichan has this great functionality where you load dictionaries via
another extension and then it's used by the main program.

Right now this isn't available and the main dictionary is hardcoded in. By
1.0 I'll have this implemented.

Gmail: Characters following emoji not recognized

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In gmail, open an email containing emoji immediately followed by Japanese
characters.
2. Point at the first character following the emoji

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The first character should be recognized by rikaikun, but is not. The second
and following characters are recognized.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Rikaikun Version: 0.8.1
Chrome Windows 7.0.517.8 (Official Build 59474) dev
Windows 7 Enterprise x64

Please provide any additional information below.
To reproduce, send a message to yourself from gmail with emoticons (emoji)
inserted between Japanese phrases with no spaces between the emoji and the
Japanese characters. (Power tip: In Gmail labs, there is an Extra Emoji setting
that enables tons of emoji, including Docomo's default set.)

Doesn't lookup words in textboxes/textfields

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Go to Google.com
2.Enter any Japanese word in the search box, like "理解"
3.Place cursor over word in the textbox. Notice how no popup appears.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
It should look up the words in the textbox. Instead, nothing is looked up.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Rikaikun Version 0.8 on Windows Vista.

Please provide any additional information below.
This is a bummer because I use Rikai-chan in Google Documents, email, etc.
to lookup words as I compose text. It'd be great if Rikai-kun could also
let me do that.

Display box hides behind Video/Flash boxes

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go on YouTube and pick a video with Japanese title (e.g.
http://is.gd/5WEwL)
2. Hover on the title do make the RK popup appear

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect: RK display box on top of the video display or in a non-conflicting
location

Instead: RK box is partially or totally obscured where it overlaps with the
video frame

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

- RikaiKun 0.8
- Chrome 4.0.249.43
- Vista 64 SP2
- AMD video card (video overlay enabled as default)

Please provide any additional information below.

This is also an issue with RikaiChan (^^;)
The Z priority is likely to be too much of a low level issue. But it might
be possible to detect evil frames and pick an alternate location (?)

Update dictionaries to latest version and create a tool for making it easy to do

Hi, there does not seem to be a way currently to update the dictionary to the
latest version or to known which version of the dictionary is installed. I
believe that rikaikun may be using an old version of Edict. Rikaichan regularly
updates dictionary versions and includes a timestamp. see:

Rikaikun crashing.....

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Clicking on rikaikun icon yelds a yellow bar - The following extension has
crashed: rikaikun.
2. I have reinstalled rikaikun - problem persists.
3. So for now, rikaikun will load but it crashes upon invocation

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Rikaikun
v0.8.1, on Chrome 9.0.597.47, windows XP.

Please provide any additional information below. Rikaikun has been working
fine for a very long time. I have not made any major changes to this PC
recently. So I have no idea what is going on or why.

Slow startup (Mac only?)

On Chrome 4.0.288.1 / OSX 10.6.2 / Macbook Pro 2.4GHz it takes
between 5 and 10 seconds for rikaikun to start working (and the "on" tag to
appear) after clicking the toggle button.

After that, everything seems to work fine.

I currently don't have a Windows installation available, but a short test on
Linux didn't exhibit this behavior. I assume it's Mac-specific.

Cheers,
Martin

P.S.: Glad someone ported rikaichan to Chrome. Thanks and keep up the
good work.

Doesn't register some text on d.hatena.ne.jp properly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go to http://d.hatena.ne.jp/
2. Look at みんなのブログ section
3. Try to hover text on any line in the last column (it is in grey color, and
it is a link)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: the words would be highlighted and translated starting from the
first character
Actual: hovering the first character doesn't cause rikaikun to do anything.
But hovering the second character initiates translation.

Thanks.

Doesn't work on existing tabs when enabled immediately after install or update

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Chrome Windows 4.0.249.78 (36714) without Rikakun installed
2. Open a page with Japanese words on it (I reproed with Gmail showing
Japanese messages and google.co.jp)
3. Open a tab, go to rikaikun install page, install Rikaikun
4. Click on Rikaikun button to enable it
5. Go back to the tab with Japanese words on it. Pop-up dictionary does not
appear.
6. Open a new tab with the same page with Japanese words. Pop-up dictionary
does work.

Note that if you close Chrome entirely and reopen it, Rikaikun works on all
tabs, regardless of whether you enabled Rikaikun before or after opening
the tab.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Pop-up definitions should appear on tabs that were opened prior to
installing Rikaikun. (they don't currently on the Chrome instance when you
install Rikaikun)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Chrome Windows 4.0.249.78 (36714) XP SP3

Convert Dictionaries to Chrome format

This is pretty easy since I was able to not change the format at all from

same way.

Include additional indices that are not in Rikaichan

Rikaichan's options menu allows to display index numbers from select kanji
books (e.g. Halpern, Helsig, Nelson, etc), but I find the list of available
indices arbitrary. KANJIDIC actually includes a bunch of other books, some
of which I happen to use (I don't use any of the ones included with
Rikaichan). Would it be possible to include those additional indices with
Rikaikun? Of course, displaying them would be optional.

The "enabled message box" display is erratic

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go to http://is.gd/5WDQW (Usenet article on Google Groups)
2. Click on the RikaiKun icon to activate it
3. See multiple activation boxes

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expecting:
- The activation message should always show and only in one place.

Instead:
- In some pages (some times ?), the display box will not appear at all.
- In some pages it will display in multiple locations (at iframes and
editbox locations ?)
- In other pages it will work fine.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

- RikaiKun 0.8
- Chrome 4.0.249.43
- Vista 64 SP2

Please provide any additional information below.

- The message is particularly useful because it's also a keyboard usage
reference.
- The message "not displaying at all" seems harder to reproduce
consistently.

Get rikaikun to work with text boxes.

I'm not sure this is possible, but the lack of the ability is much worse than
not being able to parse buttons so I'm going to try hard.

Might require a webkit patch.

to be better than the original rikaichan

This is an ideas that i think it should be an epic for Japanese learners

- an option to display both word definition page and Kanji detail page
side-by-side in same page. because i hate having to press key over and over to
switch between those two pages. but we not having to display "all" detail of
Kanji (like technical codes,Kanji level,stroke,...) but just some useful info
to help memorizing words easier. nowadays everyone got a wide-screen display.
so it's worth doing so.

- an option to display only popular word (indicated by (P) in definition). Or,
use some way to make it look different (colors, bold, lines).

- can also handle romanized text (usually in some song lyrics posted by none
Japanese-learners)

- i prefer something more clear (like, black text and white bg, gray-scale)
color scheme. rikaichan's default colors aren't so easy to read.

- make rikaikun's icon be same design as Chrome's menu bar style

- layering bug that rikaichan have with youtube videos.
