draw a huge 5,000px canvas and use it as the background. I remember FF having problems drawing images that are bigger than the canvas, so check that out.

There's probably a way to do

background: -webkit-canvas(mycanvas)
url(fallback.png);

so that it works crossbrowser and progressively enhances.
