LEDs don't power off if you still want to control them without an external switch like a relay.
Sending them black turns them 'off', and that isn't currently done.

Ideally it would be reading the state of the lights on first launch with get variable request. An initial $.get( "https://api.particle.io/… and success of that start the post timer which checks for a new color or throws an error that the Particle device could not be reached.
