Future of Nano Project Firefox Port?

As someone misunderstand my future plan, let me put words at begin.

Nano Adblocker is abandoned at the time new upstream devs push their privacy policy. There is no plan to continue Nano Adblocker and urge user migrate to uBO. v1.0.0.154 is released, meaning the end of Nano Adblocker.

Nano Defender is planned to rename as a new project which is independent form any entities or people. I have never claimed abandon Nano Defender, unless I make a typo I do not notice and please let me know in this case.

If you don't trust, check my edit history of this thread.

As upstream project has been acquired by new developers, and until the time this issue post, no words are received from new upstream developers. It is time to reconsider the future of the port. Again, I am neutral to upstream decision. Everyone may have their hard time and it is their rights to decide what to do in their life. Do not blame anyone for that.

Initially, I am not hostile to the new developers, but the recent updates seems untrustworthy to me. Although their removal of privacy policy on Chrome Store is suspicious enough, the bigger issue is that every links found on Chrome store still link to the old developers repository, while the former developer claims he already lost control of his extension. Given that I cannot find their repository anywhere, nor neither they exist on the issue tracker to introduce themselves as new developers, I really doubt whether the "two developers" exist, as I don't see any reasons to hide themselves to their users. It is unlikely I will maintain this port for them under current situation, unless they at least show up on somewhere that can be interacted with. I hope these are just because they still not yet post or update anything in this early stage...

So, the remaining options will be abandon or maintain as a new project in worst case. But the later case is a tough job. Not only just two extensions, but also Nano Filters, NanoMeow and Nano resources. Without them, Nano Adblocker is just a uBO clone and Nano Defender is just some user scripts. Given that I am not as active and experienced as the upstream developers, I really afraid I will do more harm than benefit to user if I make mistake on that.

For now, I will release one more version of NA that update included the last former developer changes, but I am not sure what's next if still no words from upstream. ND may still be updated when needed as it is designed working on uBO as well even decided to detach from upstream. Related links of announcement will be included in release notes and README as well when released, which is supposed to be within two days.

I am still open to any decisions, including the new developers given that they are good but just I misunderstood them[1]. Decision is now firmed, see below.

TL;DR

  • NA will most likely no longer receive future update unless upstream maintain themselves or at least, they contact me for that.
  • ND may still be updated, but whether maintain independently from upstream depends on their stance. might be renamed and released as a new product deal to bad reputation of the name "Nano Defender" since Chrome 15.0.0.206 can be consider as malware.

NA and ND with LiCybora as author on AMO or on my GitHub repository are still under my control and independent from any entities or people.

[1] They update their privacy policy but still keep themselves stealth from GitHub, which means they are active and purposefully hide themselves. There is no point to maintain for an unidentifiable developer.

Issues with another addon

I noticed that when using the addon "All tabs helper" if you enable "nano defender" it will make the addon not be able to properly read wich tabs are unloaded. For example if you have a session with multiple tabs open and all suspended the addon "all tabs helper" will show them on the list greyed out but as soon as you enable "nano defender" all those tab show like normal tabs (not greyed out). I don't know why nano defender is affecting other addons (besides adblockers).

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/all-tabs-helper/

I'm on firefox 65b12 x64 dev edition on Win7 x64

Tested on a clean profile with just nano defender and all tabs addon

Nano Defender Pro rejected by AMO

Details:
This version did not pass the review because of the following issues:

1) eval uses are generally not allowed for security and performance reasons. eval is only necessary in rare cases. Please use a different method or explain why eval is required in your add-on.
For more information: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/eval#Never_use_eval!

TBH, eval exist only three times, while two are patching the eval function to prevent further detection of adblocker instead of calling eval. The remaining one will call eval due to the replacement of function name for bypassing detection. Maybe they think is one is problematic.

The only workaround now is to disable the remaining one rule which is actually use of eval.

[Planning] Relax minimum gecko version to 56 for GitHub hosted version

Since filter response data have no rules now, minimum version can be relaxed to 56. I plan to deprecate this on GitHub hosted build due to Firefox-specific and unlikely update frequently. These rules if need will goes for AMO version, which Quantum users should migrate to.

Doing so may benefit user stuck at Firefox 56/Waterfox who still using legacy XUL addons while no side effect to existing Quantum users for now, and unlikely in future as well.

Planned to take effect in upcoming version.

Notice that nothing change for version on AMO, and again Quantum users are encouraged migrating to AMO version for taking benefit of post-Quantum Firefox-specific API such as dynamic content script.

Does Nano Defender work without Adblock Warning Removal List without problems?

[Request] Waterfox support

I use uBlock Origin in the Waterfox browser (Firefox fork) and would like to install Nano Defender too, but for some reason Waterfox reports it as "incompatible". I'd appreciate if it could be make compatible in a future version.

check for update

Would it be possible to provide a "check for update" which would automatically check the github release, if we have to manually update the extension?

Right now, I usually forget to update the extension until I remember to (maybe once a month).

Since the extension isn't on the mozilla store, it would help.

(Auto-)Update not working with MITM proxy

This extension works for me great on Windows 7 pro (64bit) + Firefox 61.0.1 (64bit) and updates itself in Firefox.

On a Windows 10 pro (64bit) system the auto-update in Firefox doesn't work (updates are never found) and even with manually downloading the newest version and installing it, there are problems:
If I click on the newest xpi-file on github and allow Firefox to install the extension from github, then there is a popup in Firefox that says because of a connection error the add-on couldn't be downloaded.
So I always have to download it via right-click first, and then install the new version by double-clicking the downloaded xpi-file.

cant update the filterlists for uBlock Origin

Title.
I installed Firefox ESR and been importing my stuff from my main installation of Firefox. When the time to install Nano Defender came (turns out I was using it wrong all along, as I thought that I didn't need the NanoDefenderFirefox addon if I used the filterlists for uBO btw), I noticed that I can't update the filterlists in uBO. Judging by how they're being displayed as full links, I'm guessing they're not working at all.

Nano Build just updated, please pull the changes before building the next release.

Disable console logging in release build

Hello,

Could you please remove console statements (including warnings) from the build file that is being deployed?
I'm pretty sure I've seen it in some policy rules not to spam console with logs.
Imagine if every add-on would be printing there something...

Thank you!
And congratulation for the AMO release! I've been waiting for this a long time.

latinolinks.site and radikal-gamez.net

The site tododvdfull.com hides their free links, like:
https://latinolinks.site/s.php?i=VjJ0YWEyRXlTbk5oTTJ4WVZrWndUbHBXVW5Oa1ZuQklUbFp3YTFZd2NERldNV2hoWVRGYVdGVnFVbFZXUlhCeVdXeEZPVkJSUFQwPQ==
That page, as an example, is an adblock checker, which just forwards to Google.com if detected.
Ublock Origin by itself, on legacy Edge is the only browser that I could get to have that link forward correctly. ABP with generichide/UBO with cosmetic filtering off/UBO with Nano/Edge Chromium/FF won't work. Those just forward to Google.com, instead of this.
Browser console shows:
[Nano] Failed :: FuckAdBlock Defuser :115:13
[Nano] Failed :: Read-only Property window.canRunAds :14:13
[Nano] Failed :: Read-only Property window.canShowAds :14:13
[Nano] Failed :: Read-only Property window.isAdBlockActive :14:13
[Nano] Failed :: Adfly Skipper :65:13
I've trimmed off the tab it was found on, but that specific link came from https://www.tododvdfull.com/collateral-2004bd-25latino/ Click "Descargar", then "Enlaces gratis". Putting screenshots would not help, as the page is just a white screen, before forwarding.

Another Nano failure on Cloudflare DDOS check pages on radikal-gamez.net. The check runs on first visit from a browser without the cookie that gets dropped when you pass it. I think you can trigger the check if you're not a member of the site.

filterResponseData response garbage when resources loaded from cache

Explain what was not right (optional if obvious):

When the resource(s) is/are cached, StreamFilter no longer stream the data of resource. This somehow limit the usage of Firefox resources filtering especially for script which is likely to be cached. A workaround is required to avoid crash due to loaded from cache when using StreamFilter.

[Question] Is Nano Defender for Firefox extension required to include the filters for uBO?

Hi,

Just wondering if the Nano Defender for Firefox extension is required, otherwise what does it bring, for Firefox users as myself running uBO.

Wouldn't it be enough (as it was I think several years ago) to simply follow the Extra installation steps for uBlock Origin? which are:

Step 1. Subscribe to Adblock Warning Removal List.
Step 2. Subscribe to Nano Defender Integration filter list.
Step 3. Go to uBlock Origin dashboard, select Settings tab, check I am an advanced user, click the gears icon that shows up, replace unset after userResourcesLocation by: NanoResource

Thanks for info/advice.

Package for Palemoon/Basilisk

This is what #19 appears to be about, to the tee.

Palemoon and Basilisk are two pre-servo forks of firefox, which are used by people who require XUL/NPAPI plugin support. Palemoon, if I recall, totally lacks web extension support, while Basilisk does support basic web extensions, although the packaging for the extension would need to be adjusted.

Nearly all PM/Basilisk users are using some manner of advertisement blocking, so I can only presume that you will get more indecipherable requests.

Incompatible with cyberfox.

Tells me it is incompatible for cyberfox.
I tried all releases on the first page of latest releases 15.0.~
I hope it is possible to work this out.

Thank you for your time and dedication on this project.

As.com

Just go to www.as.com , and you'll see the yellow pop-up at the bottom of the page : "You are seeing this message because ad or script blocking software is interfering with this page.
Disable any ad or script blocking software, then reload this page."

I have already reported several issues here. Always with the same browser (FF) and extensions (µBlock Origin, Nano Defender, Privacy Possum...). Sorry but I don't want to be forced to screen cap every time, disable extensions, enable them afterwards, etc..

Thanks for your understanding !

PS : I had the same issue today with www.okdiario.com . Probably because both sites are managed by the same company, which implemented some anti-block software today (I read them every day : yesterday everything was fine, and today both sites have the same pop-up).
