python-p3-environment-setup's Issues

Tell students to code along?

Canvas Link

Concern

We ask students to run commands in their terminal, then notice changes in 'the directory'. We might want to specify that students should fork and clone this lab, so they know where to look. I can see students running these commands in their terminal without forking and cloning, then becoming confused as to where they should look.

Tell students to switch global back to 3.8.13?

Canvas Link

https://my.learn.co/courses/653/pages/environment-setup?module_item_id=83719

Concern

In this lesson, we tell students to install 3.9.2 and then set it as the global Python version. We then also ask them to re-install pipenv, which they should have already done earlier.

We then tell them to run a command using 3.8.13, which seems to be causing confusion for students and occasionally results in environment issues.

Why are we having students do this? To just have them practice managing different Python versions? Why don't we tell students to reset the global version to 3.8.13, as that's the version that's used throughout the course? (According to my knowledge.)

I'm happy to open up a PR that resolves these issues / ambiguities, but I don't know what I should be adding at present - this lesson is just too vague and confusing with its purpose, intent, and direction.

The instructions are misleading.

Concern

After having the student type the command pipenv --python 3.11 the instructions say that it will generate a PipFile and PipFile.lock file and it does not, it only creates the PipFile. Once the student runs the next command pipenv install requests, that is when the lock file is generated.

3.9.2 breaks pipenv?

Canvas Link

https://learning.flatironschool.com/courses/6049/pages/environment-setup?module_item_id=467997

Concern

When I set my global version of python to 3.9.2 using pyenv as per the instructions, I was no longer able to use pipenv. Once I switched back to 3.8.13 (using pyenv), I was able to use pipenv again. I'm not sure if other people have already experienced this, but we should tell students to set their global version to a version of python that pipenv can work with.
