Yes the two methods are similar in that they both use clustering and a cluster-based MST.
One of the main differences is that TSCAN projects cells directly onto the branches of this MST, whereas Slingshot uses simultaneous principal curves to infer smooth trajectories (I'm not sure what "smoothing" you are referring to in the case of TSCAN).
Also, I would consider TSCAN to be more of a complete workflow, as it includes a normalization method, PCA for dimensionality reduction, and Gaussian mixture models for clustering. Slingshot is more narrow in scope, focusing only on trajectory inference. We take these upstream choices as given, allowing users to select their own methods.
