Microtasks are faster than macrotasks.

In theory that seems correct, however MutationObservers deals with the DOM, which I suspect could diminish the advantage in performances in unpredictable ways.
I am for exploring the possibility of using them, but only with thorough performance tests.

Some testing I did (unfortunately not online) found that MutationObservers were crazy faster than postMessage, mainly because they don't wait for DOM reflows and such.

Besides, postMessage uses the DOM (window is the biggest DOM object of them all!)

Are you referring to window.postMessage or to port.postMessage (via MessageChannel)?

Ah right I got confused. I tested against window.postMessage. I wonder how much overhead MessageChannel removes. I am pretty sure it still allows DOM reflows though (i.e. is a macro-task).
