site-maven-plugin does not work

When I try to create a site using

   <plugin>
       <!-- deploy the site to github pages -->
       <groupId>com.github.github</groupId>
       <artifactId>site-maven-plugin</artifactId>
        <version>0.9</version>
       <configuration>
           <server>github</server> <!-- the id of the server with the passwords in settings.xml -->
           <message>Creating site for ${project.version}</message>
       </configuration>
       <executions>
           <execution>
               <phase>site</phase>
               <goals>
                   <goal>site</goal> <!-- the site goal uploads to ghpages -->
               </goals>
           </execution>
       </executions>
   </plugin>

it fails with

[ERROR] Failed to execute goal com.github.github:site-maven-plugin:0.9:site (default) on project java-file-utilities: Error creating blob: Not Found (404)

I cannot tell if this is a configuration problem on my part, or simply a bug in the plugin, but other people are also reporting this problem.

For now I have created the site manually, but it would be better if the plugin would work properly, or at least have better diagnostics.
