node-meatspace's Introduction

Build Status

This project is to encourage and promote real world in-person events by/for the node.js community.

If you're interested in sharing events in your area and how they're being run, please consider submitting a pull request to knode.io. These projects are partnering to provide a comprehensive view of Node.js events happening at the local user group level and larger conference scale.

Calendar

If you know about any events that aren't listed please add them to the README and send a pull request.

node-meatspace's Issues

Knode collaboration and maintinence changes

Heya,

I haven't been great about keep this project up to date all by myself lately. I've now added @phated @hackygolucky and @gergelyke as collaborators.

For reference, this is what I was doing when I was on top of maintaining this.

  1. Merge pull requests when they came in. Pull down the change, run the build script locally and push the updated the index.html static file. gh-pages does the rest.
  2. Every week move the schedule around a big to highlight this week. I'd also troll through what I could find for the next week on meetup.com and add it manually.

I had also originally intended this to be a place for people to go if they wanted to ask questions about running a meetup or get one started. knode has already succeeded much more at that so I think it's a good idea to direct the issues that are here to knode and alter the text on the website to point at knode for resources and support in organizing a new event.

When we list a Node event, what are we looking for?

When looking at events that are currently listed, they are most oftentimes clearly named as Node funtimes. Are the events expected to be Node -only- or focused on Node?

For instance, there are JavaScript conferences that will dedicate a healthy number of talks to Node.js. Should we accept those?

Convert to Google Spreadsheet?

So, @jlord just did some pretty cool stuff for NodeSchool using sheetsee. She was basically able to replace the pull request HTML stuff we were doing with a realtime Google spreadsheet.

This lowers that bar for contributions a bit and also allowed her to create a map visualization and a calendar visualization pretty easily. We might also be able to get more metadata about the events (meetup, workshop, nodeschool, conference, hackathon, etc).

What do people think?

Revive @nodemeatspace

We should create a keepass or something similar to share the twitter account's password, so we can publish events there too.

Forgo two-step merges for this repo.

I can see why it might be a good idea to have two people check out each commit in some other repos but this one is incredibly low risk.

I'm thinking that optimizing for writes is the best course of action. Backing something out is incredibly easy if something bad gets merged so it isn't like there is much risk in having each collaborator merge without a second ok'ing it.

Getting a meetup started

It looks like #5 covers some of this, but a few months ago I gave a talk called Mappers in Meatspace at the OpenStreetMap US conference. After the fact I realized that it was actually just about how to take online communities (particularly technical ones) and move them offline.

This obviously isn't at all about node, but if you ignore the OSM-specific stuff it might be relevant to people who are looking to create node meetups. Even if it's not useful, it might be worth adding other "get a meetup started" resources to this project.

Oh hi! nodemeatspace is having a sad

We were redirecting to nodemeatspace.com to list events for knode. Turns out, this isn't currently working. :)

Someone have a few minutes to look into this?
@mikeal Have you monitored this lately? The DNS looks bad.

stream/recording indicator

it would bo good to see if a particular event will be recorded or streamed, even if its not 100% accurate

To meetup or not to meetup

I've been thinking a lot lately about less traditional "meetups" (lots of chairs facing forward while someone talks and we all eat pizza).

Some of the events that bring people together and seem to create a more lasting social fabric are the "drinkups" and other informal events.

When pulling the Calendar together I noticed all kinds of drinkups, study groups, beach hackathons, etc.

What are people's experience with less formal events vs. meetups?

iCal feed of Node events

Would be great to be able to subscribe to an iCal feed of all the events that automatically updates, maybe a shared Google Calendar?

Email Newsletter?

I was thinking about doing a MailChimp weekly newsletter breaking down all the upcoming events.

What do people think?

Knode Post Mortem.

I noticed in knode/knode.github.io#26 that this is no longer live so I wanted to kick of an Issue to see what we've learned from this whole experience. I'm logging the issue here because this repo has the most followers and stars.

I'd like those that were here in the beginning on Knode, before node-meatspace was brought here, to fill in some of the history and early goals and I'll set aside some time to write about node-meatspace and what I've learned watching it rise and fall :)
