HTTP Proxies can serve a very decent purpose, just linking a 10 year old PDF and saying "dont use HTTP Proxies" isnt doing them justice.
Transparent Forward Proxies are used by Chinese and Iranian citizens to bypass their Government firewalls, and so could you bypass firewalls and hide your Activity from your ISP or pesky admins.
The keyword here is "selfhosted". Yes a malicios proxy could MITM you, but tbh so could a malicious VPN if they really wanted to. But because VPN, WireGuard and even ShadowSocks are getting fingerprinted these days, forward proxies (for example hiding behind cloudflare) are very valid tools.
Self hosted VPN with the ability to share your bandwidth with others for secure network and privacy and the best part about it is open source.
