2014-02-13-unsw's Introduction

I am a research associate professor at UC Berkeley's Institute for Data Science. I'm passionate about making science more open and research software more visible. In 2011, I co-founded the rOpenSci project and served as its founding director through 2024. I am an advisor for The US Research Software Sustainability Institute, The UK Software Sustainability Institute (SSI), and an advisor to Open Journals. Lately, you can find me on BlueSky.

2014-02-13-unsw's Issues

Logistics

For the host

@enterthesloth

  • Make sure the room has enough outlets for everyone to use.
  • Make sure the room has wifi (or set in motion whatever we need to do to make that happen)
  • Set up eventbrite (possibly with a private code) and set limit to total spots - reserved spots.
(note, it looks like eventbrite registration can easily be included into the gh-pages template we have. Should I find out more from Amy Brown?)

For instructors (to do 7-10 days before bootcamp)

  • Once all 40 (or total limit) is reached, send out installation instructions 1 wk before (any earlier is too soon).
  • Mostly make sure students have RStudio, latest R, and running has_devel() returns TRUE (means devtools, RTools, and Linux equivalent are properly installed). There are some Mavericks specific instructions we need to include
  • Set up survey to find out what the target audience is most keen on learning + past experience w/ various tools. See old example here.

For @dfalster and @richfitz

  • Find two helpers. Preferably women coders in the Sydney area.

gh-pages do not build

This may just be GitHub taking its own sweet time but something to look into if it doesn't build in a day or two. No rush on this.

Find helpers for bootcamp, ideally women

Have the following candidates:

  • Natalia Vaudagnotto: honours student in Tanaka lab at UNSW works in bioinformatics, originally from computer science.
  • Carmen Chan: Phd student in Tanaka lab at UNSW experience with R and shell
  • Jennifer Buhler: PhD student in Computer Science at UNSW, otherwise works at Intersect.
  • Diego Barneche: PHD student at Macquarie University. Can teach or tutor.

Carmen and Natalia definite, Jennifer keen but cannot commit until closer to day, once she knows how her PhD is tracking and whether she can spare the time.

I suggest we say yes to the three women and get Diego involved with the UTS camp.
