mac80211 driver for the Marvell 88W8864 802.11ac chip
trunk
openwrt r45601
Linux 3.18.11 #1 SMP Mon May 4 22:49:32 CEST 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux
kmod-mwlwifi driver
3.18.11+10.2.8.5.p0-20150422-1
If you set the 5Ghz to 160Mhz channel width. It caused the 5Ghz to be set as "Client" instead of "Master" disabling the 5Ghz.
Using the latest driver, 5Ghz stopped working with VHT80 after a few hours until a power cycle. A reboot did nothing.
After reboot, remote WAN SSH fails unless DropBear is restarted, whereas LAN SSH has no issues.
(I'm not sure what information is needed, so please let me know what other information I need to pull and post.)
K.V.: 3.18.16
F.V.: r46118 / LuCI (git-15.168.50780-bae48b6)
DropBear V.: 2015.67-1
LAN SSH is set to it's own port and set to LAN only
WAN SSH is set to it's own port and set to WAN only
From looking at the running processes, DropBear is starting a process for the LAN SSH port, but is not starting the subsequent process for the WAN SSH port. As a workaround, I'll simply add a command to restart DropBear after a reboot.
I have noticed this the most on my iphone 5s and my Macbook Pro early 2013. I am checking with the rest of the family when they get home today to see if they have the same issues. It seems to maintain the actual WiFi connection but stops transmitting data. A simple disco and reconnect of the client device seems to restore data for a while 15 - 20 minutes max.
It seems to happen on both the 2.4 and 5 Mhz radios. I generally have about 25 devices online during peak, maybe 6-7 wireless devices max online though.
I am running gen1 WRT1900AC. Please let me know if you need any further info or logs. I am more than willing to also do a screen share if some one wishes to look at the router directly.
When upgrading to 59e0d3d from aaf953e wifi perormance on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz was severely impacted. Reverting to the previous version resolved the issue.
The affected client was a 2008 unibody macbook.
An LG G4 phone seemed unaffected.
The driver was outputting the following

... disconnecting for new activation request ...
Hi, recently I have bought Linksys WRT1200AC router to replace my old WRT54GL. First week I ran it with latest stock firmware to see how it works and to monitor the connection quality from my notebook running Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS with rtl8188ee WiFi chipset. It was OK in general but I have noticed a lot of messages in /var/log/syslog in my notebook which start with 'disconnecting for new activation request'.
When it happens on the notebook, there is no big problem. But I also have a TV with Samsung BD C6900 player which is connected to Internet over WiFi and at the same time when the message mentioned above appears in the notebook system log, video stream on TV freezes and starts buffering which means that old connection is broken and player needs to connect again.
That was quite annoying, so I decided to try OpenWRT firmware with a hope that these new activation requests can be controlled somehow to keep video stream running without interruption. I have downloaded and installed Kaloz's firmware, so the router is running now OpenWrt Chaos Calmer r45573 / LuCI (git-15.090.50849-576e235). I have configured the router to setup my home WiFi network with WPA2 PSK (CCMP) encryption and started to monitor the connection status with my notebook. Unfortunately, new activation requests appear too frequently like it was with the stock firmware. Here is an example:
Jun 6 08:00:24 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 08:16:54 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.

Jun 6 09:00:55 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 09:17:25 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.

Jun 6 10:29:01 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 10:45:31 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 10:56:31 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 11:24:06 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 11:46:10 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 12:02:44 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
Jun 6 12:19:18 qpoint NetworkManager[16604]: (wlan0): disconnecting for new activation request.
With old Linksys WRT54GL router running Tomato the connection was much more stable.
Since issue were I mentioned this was marked as resolved, I thought I should create a new one.
Dmes sometimes show this when clients (with different chipsets) connect to AP:

[476322.782891] wlan0: failed to set key (2, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) to hardware (-5)
Repeated over and over. 2.4 GHz works fine and the only way to get out of this state seems to be through a reboot. This problem is not limited to Apple devices, the client that caused the error this time was a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2. gen with an Intel Wireless-card (7260). I have also seen it with an iPhone 6s. If it matters, this error seems to happen right after the devices wake up. Of course that is when they try to connect to wifi again, but maybe there are some power-saving stuff in router or something.
Since no one else is going to start this issue :)

I am experiencing an issue exclusively on one of my Apple devices. I have tried the fix described in the other posts, but it did not help in this case.
I have created this as a separate issue, because the symptoms appear to be slightly different than some of the other wireless disconnects that are being reported.
The device that is experiencing the problem is a Late 2010 MacBook Air (OS X 10.10.1). It is able to connect to the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, and access the Internet, but after 25 seconds it consistently disconnects. It is able to connect to one of my other routers without an issue.

I have been noticing wifi drops on the 2.4ghz network only on the 1900. Monitoring from the overview screen and running ping against specific devices confirms this.
The 5ghz seems fine, the SNR ratio seems to be steady, the noise fluctuates between 91% and 89% and the signal never goes away on the devices I have connected
On the 2.4ghz the SNR fluctuates really bad, it starts solid at 95% then drops specifically to 76% then drops to 46% where at that time the devices loose contact for about 12ms of time. This can be noted when running ping -t command on those devices they are normally 1-3ms response times till the noise ratio drops to 46% then goes to 12ms time and starts back up.
Screenshots of OpenWRT area and ping times included
The devices are as follows:
Router WRT1900AC running CC with new Wifi
Running in 2.4ghz mode:
Foscam 8918w IP Cameras -3 devices
HP 1102 Wireless Laserjet - 1 device
HP 4630 Wireless Inkjet - 1 device
Nest Thermostat - 1 device
Nest Protect Fire and CO - 4 devices
Android Tables - 4 devices
Running in 5ghz mode with no problems:
Android Tables - 2 devices
Ipad tablet - 1 device
Please can a revised driver be released removing (or at the very least, reducing) the kernel debug messages - at least for CC [Final].

My box is wrt1900ac v1, complied with trunk version r47680.

DESIGNATED DRIVER (Bleeding Edge, r47680)
My iPad 4 (I think, anyway model is MD523X/A) won't connect to the 2.4 Ghz wifi.
I also see the same problem with iPad mini (model MGGT2X/A) and a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 (models GT-P7500).
The wireless attempt always returns to asking for a password over and again.
It sometimes (often) appears the device has associated with the router as it appears in the client list on the status page but ultimately fails to connect.
I'm currently using "OpenWrt Chaos Calmer r43860 / LuCI Master (git-15.005.65059-9edd0e4)" and have observed the same symptoms with lifehacksback's build and the OpenWrt build based on 3.14.27.
Use case:
USB 3 External HD formatted as ext4 and connect to router's USB 3 port.
Wired connection to FTP, NFS, SAMBA share of the attached USB HD behaves normal.
Wireless connection to FTP, NFS, SAMBA share of the same USB HD is very slow and pretty much stall on OS X machine.
Wireless to other NFS/FTP/SAMBA share on the network (but not physically attached to router) works normal.
The problem only exists on wireless access to usb storage attached to the router.
While testing iperf3 performance on 2.4ghz (20mhz channel, 144mbit rate), 3 meters from the device, i get the following performance with my Intel N300 laptop:
UP: 34mbit
DOWN: 19mbit
(also tested with an ipad air 2 on the 2.4ghz channel and it gives 40 up and 30 down as well)
proof (server side logging):
root@WRT1900AC-v2:~# iperf3 -s

In earlier builds these figures were quite a bit higher. Especially on 2.4ghz.
since the WDS related was closed with bad reason, i simply reopen it here
WDS is currently not supported and it would be nice if it would be supported (or is not working at all) and WDS has nothing todo with Mesh. its about WDS AP Bridging, which does allow to associate 4 addr frame supporting clients (WDS STA), but standard clients as well. this is a important feature for reliable dedicated network bridges.
so do not close with reason like "mesh is supported" mesh is something else and a different protocol.
or lets face it. nobody will use mesh if he wants to connect 2 devices to build a network bridge.
and if it helps in competition. all other chipset vendors do support WDS modes and i run into troubles to explain DD-WRT used (by the way, i'm the maintainer of this firmware) why the Linksys WRT1900ac is not capable of doing WDS, if all other Devices from Atheros / Qualcomm and Broadcom do support these operation modes. i hope you understand
See ticket: https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/20857 comment 13 for a more complete crash dump.
I asume currently that Hostapd crashes due to the driver crashing, eventually taking down the kernel. But please correct me if i'm wrong.
Opened a new issue on @yuhhaurlin request.
Things have improved significanlty since 10.3.0.10, but the ba/ampdu error still occurs:

Things work fine for a while, then some random event X happens and the errors start happening (while transferring data). The devices connected to 5GHz is an iPhone 6 Plus and a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2. gen. After some time it seems the 5Ghz just gives up and takes a long nap. By connecting to the 2.4 GHz and restarting wifi, 5GHz works again but at reduced speed.
Another, potentially related error, is that the iPhone has trouble connecting to the 5GHz network. It keeps requesting me for the key, and seemingly only accepts the key when another devices (the laptop) has been connected. Otherwise it just gives me an error.

Note that the network to which we are connected is shown under "Associated Stations", and that the "IPv4-Address" is shown as "?".
Installed wifi driver 10.0.3.14, but it has problems with my FireTV boxes.... Nothing in the logs, but has very poor performance, and can't connect to my media server on my LAN. WireShark shows nothing, but ping results do show latency. As soon as I revert back to 10.3.0.3 they (firetv) work normally again.
On wifi driver 10.0.3.14
these are some of the better ping times... many go over 100ms and or time out (bouncing)

Since FireTV is Android I figured more people would be having problems, but so far that hasn't been the case.

How to reproduce the issue
Initial state: OpenWRT trunk build, enable wireless and encryption (psk2+ccmp). If using shell, then the only modified file is /etc/config/wireless
(see below), next run wifi
to bring wireless up.
Offline means client is associated, wireless connected, but no ping to router. No new lines in syslog
, iwinfo wlan0 assoclist
shows client normally, ping to router doesn't bring connection up.
If you wait for 10 minutes here, connection of client B is recovered (WPA rekeying GTK). See all logs below.
Test can be continued:
4) Do: client A - connect to 2.4 GHz
Result: client B - back online.
Same can be done with 5 GHz on both clients with same result. Encryption is required for this issue. If encryption is disabled, then no issue. How can I fix this?

AP:
Device:
OpenWRT built from trunk gets ~20Mbps of TCP throughput.
Stock WRT1900AC firmware (1.1.8.164461) with the same configuration gets ~110Mbps of TCP throughput.
Link rate shows 433Mbps on the Nexus 5 on both devices.
My Windows machine (BCM4352 2x2 802.11ac) gets >200Mbps on both OpenWRT and stock firmware.
During testing, the Nexus 5 was the only device connected to the AP.
I seem to be able to get 1300Mbps link rate with this build, whereas it was only 600Mbps on the Linksys stock firmware (that's good!).
However, actual transfer speeds seem lower than expected on my MacBook. From the tests that Ars Technica did, it should be able to hit 600Mbps.
I ran iperf transfers from my Router to my Macbook: iperf3 -c localhost.macbook -i 1 -t 30 -b 900M -w 256k
I firstly did a 900Mbps test on Wi-Fi:
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 5] 0.00-1.00 sec 30.9 MBytes 259 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 1.00-2.00 sec 42.0 MBytes 353 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 2.00-3.00 sec 41.0 MBytes 344 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 3.00-4.00 sec 42.8 MBytes 359 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 4.00-5.00 sec 44.1 MBytes 370 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 5.00-6.00 sec 44.1 MBytes 370 Mbits/sec
I got a baseline going via Ethernet, and it seemed to hit 900Mbps:
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 5] 0.00-1.00 sec 71.9 MBytes 603 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 1.00-2.00 sec 108 MBytes 905 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 2.00-3.00 sec 108 MBytes 907 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 3.00-4.00 sec 108 MBytes 907 Mbits/sec
[ 5] 4.00-5.00 sec 109 MBytes 912 Mbits/sec
There doesn't seem to be any frame-level failures or retransmissions going on:

Are these speeds expected? Is there anything else that I can look into to troubleshoot if not?
@yuhhaurlin, currently getting these errors, which break all wifi connectivity. Am using the latest driver, and Openwrt build 48005. (X'ed out end of the mac adresses for privacy). Was watching a Netflix movie when it happened.
WiFi setup phy0: wpa2-psk + aes, channel 36, country NL, VHT40.
BTW: Disabling and enabling the interface gives me a kernel oops (have logged it if you are interested). Will try a powercycle later to get my interface back up.

Router: Linksys WRT1900AC
Version: OpenWrt Chaos Calmer r45610 / LuCI Master (git-15.125.30735-c38b4cd)
Kernel: Linux Kernel: 3.18.11
This may or may not be the same as some of the older issue reports.
Have laptop connected to 5GHz (N).
Have android connected to 5GHz (N).
Start an on-going ping on the laptop, everything OK.
Switch android to 2.4GHz - pings time out, no router login access, no Internet access.
Switch android back to 5GHz and everything resumes normally.
Trunk r45950, uptime 9d 14h 2m 13s
My AC wifi speeds are really low with the router running openwrt. Tested with a Nexus 5 and an Apple Ipad Air2. Both devices connect to the router at 433mbps but get low thoroughput of about 20-30 mbps(megabits NOT megabytes). Whereas with stock linksys FW i can transfer files at over 240mbps
I have have tried different channels, tramit power etc.
Currently running: OpenWrt Chaos Calmer r43853
Radio 0 set to N only, 2.4GHZ, 40MH WPA2-PSK
Radio1: AC only, channel 161, 80MHZ, 23db, WPA2-PSK
Not sure whether this should become a bug against Luci, but the Wi-Fi config allows a user to select 160MHz on a WRT1900AC, even though the hardware itself doesn't support it. Is this something that the driver/package advertises to the interface? It seems to correctly report its capabilities in iw

Im running a Linksys WRT1900ac (V1 and V2) on the latest code off the OpenWrt repository.
I've put given the ban (2.4) card two interfaces. One AP mode and one Monitor mode.
When it is running with a Monitor mode interface, it kernel panics every few minutes and restarts.
When the router is running with just an AP mode interface, none of these errors happen.
Following the backtrace, skb_dequeue seems to be called from mwl_tx_done in tx.c.

You can probably lift a bunch of code from mwl8k to do this.
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/net/wireless/mwl8k.c
Some documentation here:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/tree/master/Documentation/firmware_class
I have ran a series of test (ping, speed, file transfer) and I have noticed the 2.4ghz maxed out at around 81 mbps (of my internet speed) compared to 180 mbps (the most I get from my isp). I assume this is hardware rather than software.
Now I have ran many test on the wireless from my laptop (Bonobo Extreme w/ Intel 7260 AC Wireless Chip) and have noticed a few things:
WRT1900AC on latest CC build (kernel 3.18.1) refuses to stream wirelessly on 2.4GHz band any media file (using samba shares, minidlna and twonky media server). Signal meter on WD media player is full. Tried all combinations of wireless encryption --> no joy. Distance between router and media player between 1 meter and 10 meters (2 separate rooms). Same issue on trunk firmware image using kernel 3.14. Packages installed after flash: luci, luci-theme-bootstrap, luci-app-samba, samba36-server, block-mount, kmod-fs-ext4, minidlna, hacked copy of twonky media server from original Linksys firmware image.
Please advise.

Hi,
I have configured time zone for hostapd but it did not show up in the beacons. The debugging the hostapd binary, I observe that all the configured parameters and IEs are being passed to driver APIs and also seen in fwcmd.c: mwl_fwcmd_parse_beacon(...).
Is there any restriction within Marwell's firmware that is does support only selected IEs? Do you have any documentation/link for supported hostcommands and parameters (in addition to the one listed in dev.h and fwcmd.c)?
Best Regards,
Deepak
logread, console messages, and iw event -f all displayed in log below. The mwlwifi module randomly hung during transmit, then was interrupted by a timer and the stack dump was generated.
This is running 10.3.0.3

Ok i just installed openwrt-15.05-rc3-mvebu-armada-xp-linksys-mamba-squashfs-factory on this wrt1900ac v1 and now access to the internet via wireless is excruciatingly slow....
backgroud of my network DHCP and DNS on Windows server 2012, internet router is Pfsense. All im using the WRT1900AC for is a wifi access point. doesnt matter if i try and use 5ghz or 2.4ghz the result is the same 30-60 seconds for websites loading on my phone..not as bad with laptop however its still bad...speedtest.net shows speeds of 20mb down 5 up i have a 30mb internet connection....however the issue isnt entirely with the speed as it is the ping time which shows anywhere from 65 to 95ms.
With stock firmware it was 14 to 16ms and would download at full speed...the reason im using openwrt is because the factory firmware doesnt support Class A networks.
I have a WRT1900AC (version 1) that is currently running OpenWrt Designated Driver r47665. This includes kmod-mwlwifi_3.18.23+10.3.0.14-20151126-1.
I have an Acer laptop running Windows 10 with an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 (driver version 17.15.0.5 - which is the most recent driver from Windows Update).
With the laptop connected to either the 2.4 or 5 GHz network, the router will frequently encounter a kernel panic and reboot. This occurs with just casual browsing using Firefox.
With the laptop connected to the 2.4 GHz network, I managed to capture the following kernel panic by using a desktop PC with a wired connection to the router and a "cat /dev/kmsg":

A couple other things I've noticed:
If you need any additional information, please let me know.
Thanks.
On MacBook 2008 unibody using Broadcom's BCM94322USA successfully connects to CC build of OpenWRT running 3.18.1 kernel and mwlwifi. However the connection last for a few minutes (or seconds) before it timeout and disconnects. My macbook shows it still receiving an ip, subnetmask, router, external ip; the router show the same ip assignment to the macbook. Running the macbook under Ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16 it presents no wifi problem (proprietary module loaded bcmwl-kernel-source). My intuition is either the mwlwifi (under a build for mvebu WRT1900AC) is having authentication errors or the mac driver is not being kept up to date. I have tested again using my build (http://tinyurl.com/CC-lifehacksback-Known-Good) and Kaloz's build along with the beta of OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 which claims to fix wifi issues but has not fixed my particular issue. Currently running McWRT AA v1.0.8 using wifi driver wlan-7 ported to the WRT1900AC. Thank You
Using stock Linksys firmware or CC kernel version of Openwrt for the WRT1900 I can get the 5.0ghz to start, but I cannot get my Samsung Galaxy SIII cell phone to stay connected to it, once I am about 20-25 feet from the router. Once the phone disconnects from the 5.0Ghz range and connects to the 2.4ghz range the 5.0ghz range will turn off on the router and will not turn back on unless return to close enough range and force the phone to reconnect to that SSID There no other routers on my block that have 5.0Ghz signals and I live in a rural area.
Hello!
I, and some other guys on openwrt forum, have troubles with wifi and using at least 2 SSIDs on one radio (linksys wrt1200ac/1900ac). With driver .3 the issue appears after some hours. With .13 it will cause after some days. The only way to get wifi to work is to restart the device.
The problem looks like this: Wifi SSIDs are still shown on the network, but nobody is able to connect. After rebooting the device all Clients work fine, for some hours/days.
The detail of the status information display is dear to my heart and it isn't available yet.
I'm trying to work out what needs to be done to add it.
I've looked around quite a bit (at other mac80211 drivers too) and I wonder if adding rate information to the ieee80211_rx_status structure for received packets would help.
In any case Marvel plans to do this based on the comment:
/* TODO: rate & antenna
*/
in mwl_rx.c:mwl_rx_prepare_status().
The problem is I'm having difficulty working out the encoding of the rate field of the mwl_rx_desc structure (that comes from the wireless device) for received packets.
Is there any way we can get this answered by Marvel please?
No/wrong TX Rate frame rate information.
I hadn't noticed the driver doesn't support station mode.
I found out after tracking a WARN() splat in the log when trying to setup the device as a routed bridge.
Client mode is quite important to me but I believe it will be a primary use case for the coming WRT1200AC, assuming the wireless on the device (whatever it may be) is to be supported by this driver.
Halt means router doesn't respond to ping wired or wireless. The only way to recover is power reset. Most often triggered after wireless clients connect or disconnect to router. I think this may be related to #20.
Environment: WRT1900AC v1, trunk default build r45601, kernel 3.18.11.

I'm having issues with wireless disconnects on both bands. Initially I thought it was a problem with the 5ghz band so I've moved most of the devices to 2.4 but still see the disconnects, mostly with an Ipad 2 and 3 device. I've played around with Legacy and N mode on the 2.4 band as well as channel width but the problem persists.
I have to go into setitngs, wifi, turn off/on on the Ipad to fix the problem. Both devices use Broadcom WIFI chipsets: BCM4329 for Ipad 2 and BCM4330for Ipad 3. Both are running iOS 8.1.2
here's a sample output from logread during the event. There's nothing that shows a disconnection at the router level. At 11:31 I toggle wifi off/on on the Ipad and it logs a disassociated message.

Hi, i've recently acquired a WRT1900AC-V2 and flashed OpenWRT 15.05 on it.
Problem is the 5Ghz radio refuses tot do it's job when not using channel 36, 40, 44 or 48. No matter what country code (regulatory domain) i set or what channel width i use, only channels 36, 40 , 44, 48 can be used.
The Signal is reported being at 0 dBm in the WebIf, no wireless signal, no SSID to seen from clients, nothing at all.
I don't know if it is related to DFS but the channels that won't work all require DFS, at least in some regions.
Both 15.05 RC3 and 15.05 final are struck by this issue.
I'm not the only one reporting this problem see:
โhttps://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=294739#p294739
Here's part of the syslog, it might be of help fixing the issue:

WRT1200AC, OpenWrt r46760 (10.3.0.8)
All broadcast packets are dropped on the wlan interface. Persistent behaviour, no working setup known yet. The client device can capture broadcast packets on other AP.
Easily verifiable via arping:
LAN# arping -b $STA
[nothing]
STA# arping -b $LAN
[works]
Packets seen with tcpdump on the AP:
root@OpenWrt:~# tcpdump -np -v -e -i wlan1 "ether broadcast"
15:12:47.944742 00:90:a9:xx:xx:xx > ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff, ethertype ARP (0x0806), length 60: Ethernet (len 6), IPv4 (len 4), Request who-has $STA (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) tell $LAN, length 46
[...]
The network can work more or less via ARP learning depending on the usage pattern. It's a regression with 10.3.0.8, 10.3.0.3 (-rc3) is OK.
Also reported at https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/20437 by me.
