You pick up items by moving to the tile where the items are and then clicking on the tile again. I've expanded the description of this in the readme, but it probably needs to be made more obvious in-game. I've added an "ITEM" caption which appears on mouseover when the leading PC is standing on a tile with an item in it; this should at least encourage the player to click there.
