jupyterlab-kernelspy's Issues

Kernel indicator

When multiple KernelSpyView are opened, it can become difficult to remember which kernels they are using.

Maybe some indication (for example the path) in the toolbar could already help a bit?

Sending messages

It would be great to be able to send custom messages to the kernel.

We could imagine having a new panel with a few options:

  1. to select the channel (shell, control...)
  2. select the message (request_execute, debug_request and so on)
  3. have a json blob populated with the right schema (based on to step 1 and 2)
  4. click on a "Send" button to send the message
  5. use the existing KernelSpyView to inspect the messages

Error during installation: Cannot find module 'jupyterlab-kernelspy/package.json'

From a computer running Ubuntu 16.04 with Jupyterlab v0.35.6, and Node v9.8.0, the installation command jupyter labextension install jupyterlab-kernelspy fails with:

/home/ubuntu/Python-3.7.3/share/jupyter/lab/staging/node_modules/webpack-cli/bin/cli.js:74
				throw err;
				^

Error: Cannot find module 'jupyterlab-kernelspy/package.json'

Have I missed a prerequisite installation step?

Handle restore

At the moment the KernelSpyView view is not restored on page reload.

restore-widget

It would be great if it was, and would automatically reuse the same session!

Close the KernelSpyView on kernel shut down?

Since the KernelSpyView is instantiated with a kernel, should the view be automatically be disposed when the kernel is shut down?

For example when going to running kernels tab and clicking on "Shut Down".

Add filtering

Add a text input in toolbar to filter on message type / id.

Release needed: currently installing force JupyterLab==3.0.0

Installing this package downgrades my JupyterLab 3.0.6 to 3.0.0, and it seems to relate to a requirement of jupyterlab~=3.0.0b6 from some place.

Using pipdeptree I found...

jupyterlab-kernelspy==3.0.1
  - jupyterlab [required: ~=3.0.0b6, installed: 3.0.0]

Inspecting the release history at pypi I found the last release was made in september 2020.

From inspecting the current setup.py it seems to be more permissive than before though as of a commit made in January: ab7fa88

Conclusion

A release is needed for proper JupyterLab 3 support beyond 3.0.0! Thanks for your work on this extension! ❤️
