[Event] Growing Enterprise-ready Engineers

Please see notes below.

Title: The importance of teams

Date(s): 13th Feb

Description:

In the tech industry we are constantly having to work in teams. These teams may be a group of people you work with daily at the same company, but it also can be a fluid team consisting of clients, consultants and yourself. Working in these teams well is a important factor in our every day development - in fact most of us will be working in multiple teams all at the same time depending on the work you are doing at that very moment.

Jenny will be sharing tips and tricks from her experience on how to build teams, keep team stress levels down so that we can work with happy teams.

You may wish to provide links to your website, slides, past events, social media, etc.

Profile:

A short self-intro
Once a Web Developer, Jenny now works as a Engineering Manager at Human Made. When she started, she didn't do anything else for two weeks but organize a local conference. She is often found being an open source community evangelist, event organiser and sometimes a speaker.

Her days vary from solving issues on event sites, supporting event organisers, loudly cheering people on to contribute back to open source, and coming up with crazy ideas to help improve participation experiences in open source projects.

If you ever find her away from her laptop, she is usually binge watching F1 & anime, doing renovations or making a mess whilst cooking. You can find her around a messaging service making typos.

[Event] Pro tips for builders on AWS

Title: Pro Tips for Builders on AWS

Date(s): Whenever's good for ya'll. Sometime in July perhaps?

Description:

This talk will feature a list of quick-hitting tips aimed at improving your day-to-day life building on AWS. I'll cover working effectively with the AWS CLI and other third-party CLIs; creating, editing, debugging, and deploying an AWS Lambda-powered serverless applications quickly and easily using the new AWS Toolkit which works with VS code and other IDEs; and introducing the concept of structured logging and how to perform powerful filtering and searches on your structured application logs with Amazon CloudWatch.

The talk also has some fun history lessons that have nothing to do with AWS, so even if you're not into the cloud, you might enjoy learning a bit about the history of CLIs, IDEs, and logging data.

[JuniorDevSG Jan 2020]: Exploring Seasonal Insights from Singapore Weather Station Data

Title: Exploring Seasonal Insights from Singapore Weather Station Data

Date(s): 14 January 2020

Description:
Most of the world experience the four seasons, but how many seasons does a tropical country like Singapore have? We can get such insights from publicly-available weather data; however, we need to write scripts to make API requests for retrieving the data needed for analysis.

In this talk, I will be sharing about my approach in scraping Singapore weather station data from Data.gov.sg APIs for a user-defined time period. With the extracted data, I will also be using a data-driven approach to investigate the weather trends and seasons over the past few years, and explore how these insights could help us in predicting future weather trends.

Thinking of building your first mobile app? Well, now you can do it using the same language that powers the web!

Come along to this talk to find out about the creation of KopiRun, an app that helps you find people nearby who could help do coffee runs for you (think carpooling but for food/groceries). We'll be talking about important things to think about before you launch your app, the tech stack that went behind KopiRun, and some key decisions and takeaways out of our journey from the first line of code to putting the app on the app store.

Profile:

Speakers: Alyssa Ong and Zane Chua

Alyssa's Profile:
Alyssa is a (newly turned) Technical Program Manager who also very much enjoys coding. Alyssa has a diverse portfolio of skills ranging from mobile and web UI design to cloud architecture design, app dev and DevOps. During her free time, she works on KopiRun, plays Dota and drinks lots of bubble tea.

Zane's Profile:
Zane primarily focused on web application projects as a full-stack developer before graduating from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Computer Science. Zane has experience in launching his own start-up and SaaS product which lead to a side interest in open-source code. He maintains a few open-source products/projects in his free time.

Over the past few years, he has polished his skills over multiple projects handling both front end and backend development with a recent focus in mobile app development and developer operations.

[JuniorDevSG Jan 2020]: Lessons from coding a old-new app: Slack for Win 3.1

Title: Lessons from coding a old-new app: Slack for Win 3.1

Date(s): 14 Jan 2020

Description:

I built a Win 3.1 app during a company hackathon.

Without the benefit of modern libraries and languages, I had to read up and take care of many low level details, socket programming, HTTP, JSON parsing, UI design in code all under tight memory constraints. Nevertheless, it was a terrific lesson in understanding how things work under the hood.

I'll share my learnings and process for how an old-new app can be created with the aid of modern tools and hindsight of old technologies. And perhaps what lessons can it offer us today.

[Event] Building Web3 - Introduction to blockchain and smart contracts

Title: Building Web3 - introduction to blockchain and smart contracts

Date(s): 13 March 2020

Description:

Blockchain is a topic of great interest, and it has the potential to radically change the economy that we know of today. At the core is the idea is decentralised application - which consists of smart contracts that could connect any developers to a network of global liquidity through public blockchain network. Blockchain and smart contract could potentially be more efficient in bringing together multiple parties to work together, automating process flow and bringing efficiency through automated pieces of pre-agreed logic called smart contract.

Agenda:

  • What is blockchain?
  • What are decentralised apps and how they are different from other apps
  • Getting started with smart contract programming and dApp development

Profile:

Edison is a software engineer who specialises in blockchains, web application and data. He has spent the last three years on blockchain development and has experience working on Ethereum, Hyperledger Fabric and Zilliqa blockchain. In his past roles, he has built a security tokenisation technology, custody software and token exchange.

Edison is currently the Head of Engineering at Aqilliz - a Singapore-based marketing technology company which aims to make marketing more efficient and transparent. Before joining Aqilliz, Edison is the Application Engineering Lead and the first application engineer at Zilliqa, a Singapore-based high-throughput and secure public blockchain platform. Zilliqa is the first to implement sharding, a technology that improves the transactional capacity of a public blockchain network and is famous for the creation of a new smart contract programming language called Scilla.

Edison holds an M.Sc from Carnegie Mellon University and is an avid guitarist and amateur cook.
