Meaning, that a plain dlopen succeeds but the code in plain.jl does not?

Correct. It looks like findlibhdf5 only looks in paths containing "HDF5", whereas I had put the dlls in a common binary directory (because PATH is already too long). Never mind, I will close.
Would you be open to a patch using RPMmd to pull in the windows binaries automatically?

I started working on an HDF5 build script on the OpenSUSE build service but it's a bit of a learning curve and I have been sidetracked with release-related activities lately. For the time being, would you be ok with the following:
- repackage the minimal set of necessary DLLs from the official HDF5 distribution
- host on archive.org
- download/install (edit: actually, this would be BinDeps, not RPMmd)
By my read of the HDF5 license, this should not be a problem.
