Visiting Center for Urban Pedagogy, 4pm May 29

Hey all,

Since not all of your have got on Slack, I'm going to post an event here. (In the future this will be in Slack.)

I'm visiting the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) at 4pm this Friday, May 29, to discuss collaboration opportunities. I'm likely to be talking to them throughout the summer, and they are potentially a great resource for you (or you, a great resource for them!) You are welcome to join me for the visit. If you are interested, please RSVP before 6pm, Thursday (May 28). You can get more info here (click "Visit"): http://welcometocup.org/GetInvolved

The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is a nonprofit organization that uses design and art to improve civic engagement. CUP projects demystify the urban policy and planning issues that impact our communities, so that more individuals can better participate in shaping them.

We believe that increasing understanding of how these systems work is the first step to better and more diverse community participation.

CUP projects are collaborations of art and design professionals, community-based advocates and policymakers, and our staff. Together we take on complex issues—from the juvenile justice system to zoning law to food access—and break them down into simple, accessible, visual explanations.

The tools we create are used by organizers and educators all over New York City and beyond to help their constituents better advocate for their own community needs.

Effective communication is key in management! And the tools chosen for communication will effect your work. Stick with the good ones.

The map will have two layers: one dipicting the oil spills in Brooklyn, the other showing the community districts with their population.

Instead of having people report their status anonymously, I think it's beneficial to add in their actual names.

The search button is not working. Only 4 results showed up, which is far fewer than what it should take.

Use red and blue.

Goal is to demostrate the relationship between high-income neighborhoods and development density.

Introduction to Product Development class

Hey all,

Hope you are having a great end of the semester. I'm sending this note early since I won't be on campus for two weeks when the summer starts. Here's everything you need to know so that we can kickstart the class on time.

What is this class about?

Read the links on the main page: https://github.com/jueyang/manage-your-product. It tells you most things you need to know about this class to get started.

I will periodically add or update these links. Will keep you posted.

Get on Slack

Please fill out this form so that I can send you a Slack invite. We will minimize the use of email for this class.

What you need to send me by June 2nd

Once you joined Slack, you can send me via direct message the following:

  1. A description of your envisioned product based on your 5/19 presentation
    • what have you done already?
  2. Your plan of carrying it out.

I will set up a time to chat or correspond with you individually during the first week of class to help you further your idea (and help make the scope of your product managable.) Detailed next actions will be sent out next week.

If you are ambitious, remember your constraints:

  1. There’re a total of 11 weeks.
  2. The actual time spent on building out your product is 5-7 weeks, depending on your final scope.
  3. You have two and a half people on your team: yourself, one developer, and me (I’m the half since I am teaching. My develop/design time will be limited.)

The take-away: start small and concise.

See you tomorrow

I will be at your presentations on Tuesday, 5/19, to know more about what you have worked on. Feel free to chat with me afterwards. In fact, I encourage you to do so!
