Currently, the script has no method of configuration other than directly modifying the script.

This is impractical for a real-world scenario and less-technical users.

Suggestions:

• Read in a config file that can override the default behaviour (edit once and leave it).
• Provide command-line options to set overrides on-the-fly (would require providing the correct arguments on each run).
• Prompt the user for settings on initial (or every) start-up of the script (could require providing correct arguments on each run / if on initial would need a way to update the settings).
