Wolfram Alpha is a great fallback, plus it gives you a lot more powerful results.
On the other hand, it'd be best to have a built in calculator that doesn't abuse someone else's API, especially with a low cap on wolfram:

"Sign up for a free development account. Immediate access up to 2000 non-commercial API calls per month."

@Someguy123 That is a pretty low cap especially given the fact that until now I have been publishing the API keys I get for Cardinal with the source (with the belief that if it ever becomes an issue, I will switch to private keys.)

I also worry that parsing Wolfram Alpha data could be difficult due to all the different return types that are possible with it.

I am considering running this, exposed via a web server on my own VPS, for use with Cardinal: http://mathjs.org/

This would also ensure that I could update it as necessary. I am a bit hesitant to rely on my own services though, as I fear anyone interested in adopting the IRC bot may dislike the idea of relying on a single point of failure.

I have created a web API exposing math.js here. It's now simply a matter of implementing it within Cardinal.
