after looking at some best practices looks like the script should not have both async and defer
according to https://flaviocopes.com/javascript-async-defer/ under the heading Just tell me the best way article states that defer is best practice for scripts loading in the head

update code so that it passively sets best practice by setting defer unless explicitly disabled (set to false)
